  • Hey Bob,

I haven't booked a room yet and would be glad to split it with you.

    -Keith
  • Just sent you a PM Keith.  Room is all booked for Thur , Fri and Sat. nights.

  • I have a room booked for the camp and as of today - 4/6/11 - I have a few non-EN people interested in coming but have not yet confirmed. So if someone else is looking to share a room - let me know.
  • Has anybody done or is anybody considering doing the Half Mary that is scheduled for Sunday the 12th? Thoughts as to whether good or bad idea? Thinking might be real tough with two back to back 100 mile bike days beforehand, but we are there and the course follows good portion of IM course. So?
  • @ Bill, is the half mary an organized event? Or are you just talking about running the course...I plan on running that Sunday, just not sure how much...Would like to get a feel for the course.

All, I know its not on the schedule but Does anyone swim at the camp? Is it Open to swim? Is it safe?
  • Nate, there wiill be a lot of people swimming that weekend.  It is extremely safe and one on the most beautiful and calm open water swims you will ever do.

  • Nate, no on the 12th is the Lake Placid Marathon and 1/2. look it up on google. looks like much of the course follows course of imlp.
  • Safe????? I've heard that there is a giant alligator in Lake Placid. New York's version of the Loch Ness Monster.
  • OK, so now I'm worried about giant allegators...

Sounds like I will do some swimming very cool...I was worried about boats and no one else around...Just a little cautious/warry of open water swimming without much supervision...

not sure how big a deal it is that there is an organized marathon or 1/2 that Sunday...I was hoping to get to run a portion of the Ironman course that Sunday. The late entry fee is $85...
  • Nate I wouldn't worry about signing up. Let's just wake up when we want and hit the roads for a run.

  • Nate no worries on the water with boaters. I swim with a noodle dragging behind me on a thin line for safety
  • Isn't June mating season for giant freshwater leaches? Yeah, I think it is. They should be swarming that weekend. I hear you can fill a 5 gallon bucket in about an hour on a good day... they're like 10" long! =:-O
  • @Steve, very funny...add fresh water leaches to the list of things to worry about...
@Bob, sounds good to me...I'm thinking by Sunday I will be pretty fried...your plan sounds good.
  • There are tons of huge gators and leeches in Lake Placid...so its a good thing that we will be swimming in Mirror Lake.  Oh and there will be plenty of silly people swimming in the lake.  There will be buoy's out for the canoe/kayak race series which are pretty much the same as the one used on race day.  The famous cable will be there to follow.  There are no power boats allowed on mirror lake and it is unlikely that you will be killed by a canoe so all set there.  Anything else?

Only issue I see with running the half marathon is that I will likely not be able to walk by then.

  • So I guess you guys are okay with swimming in open water without someone in a boat nearby, just in case? Been thinking about this lately. Seems risky to me.
  • @ Jim - my wife gave me a hard time about swimming alone but was not interested in joining me or doing the kayak support thing.... I figure if she won't do safety, she can't give me grief..... Besides, my wetsuit is enough to float me and I usually swim within 20 yds of the shore when alone.

My only real concern on my local lake is getting hit by a boat or jetski...... Yikes!
  • Wow, this rally is getting close...
Two questions: Never done this camp before
    1. When is the best time to try and sneak in an OWS? Its not on the EN Rally schedule.
    2. This is a stupid question: Do I need to memorize the bike course prior to attending? Is the course marked? I know its not that complicated but I would hate to end up in CT because i missed that left turn...image
  • Nate,  the course is a big circle and easy to navigate. There are a 1/2 dozen turns which are easy to memorize, but that being said there will be plenty of people up there training when we are there so just follow the other TT bikes.

There will be plenty of free time to get your swims in.   May want to do after your long bikes after some rest and nourishment, this will also be good for legs in regards to recovery.  Plus with the lake temp. ( currently 49) it will be like taking an ice bath.

If you are nervous about missing a turn laminate a small peice of paper with the directions and throw in your bento box.

  • Bob, Thanks...small laminated mape in the bento box sounds good...49 degree water sounds REFRESHING...Lets hope it gets into the 50s by camp week...
  • So, looking forward to getting up to LP in a little over a week. For those who have done this before, will Coach P (or Coach P if you read this) send out an email modifying the plan for that week. I would assume that he does not want us to do 135 min run on Thursday followed by RR on Friday then another 100 mile ride on Saturday (or maybe he does). I am not a great runner and I can tell you that if I ran over 2 hours on Thursday morning then had to hop in the car for 10 hours up to LP I doubt my legs would get me through Fridays RR.
  • @Bill - good question! And I am doing the Quassy HIM the weekend before the Placid rally.
  • I think I may ask in the Micro forum as to what is the best approach to the long run for the Rally Week. No way i can do it on thursday-travel day-maybe a swim at mirror lake. I will either slip it to Wed or (GASP), do it on Sunday of the Rally.
  • You think we will be able to walk around by Sunday?
  • Good question. With you doing HIM week before good luck. I am no coach nor expert but if I were you I would take the entire week off prior to camp save maybe a swim or two.
  • um, Yah, the definition of a long run on Sunday is up in the air...If Chris G is worried about being able to walk by sunday, so am I...
  • Folks, I am not going to send out an email with special plans for you to modify your training. image The camp has a long run planned on Sunday...so put your thursday long run there and use Thursday to travel, maybe do a short run before you leave (or when you get there). I put a video on Facebook while on the road here in Portland to put out any fires: http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=2104495015826

I also sent out the final admin email this AM, so please check your inboxes and see you soon!
