Moving Workouts

I'm an EN newbie and just starting to look at the workout schedules you guys are suggesting for me.  I work a very different schedule than the typical 9-5p M-F.  I need to move the workouts around and combine some days because my schedule does not allow for a workout every day.  I am starting late on the Intermediate 1/2 IM plan.

Any rules about how far apart to keep workouts or which workouts should not happen on the same day?  I would typically move a swim from a day by itself and get it in on a day with a bike or run, maybe move a run to a bike day, etc.

Thanks Coach!

  • I would suggest keeping the long run, swim day, then long bike/run brick combo (3 day progression) in place...even if you have to move it around in the week. Also, I wouldn't put something hard Wed evening if you are doing your long run Thurs morning as the plan calls for...it will just hinder your long run performance. I would put the swims wherever.
  • Plenty if lit on this in the book, as well as many podcasts. The three cardinal workouts are the hard bike, the long run, and the long bike. There should be at least 36 hours (preferably 48) between them. Fit the rest in around it. There are many folks in the haus who work odd shifts (medical professionals, fire fighters, and pilots come to mind), so a good question to throw to them for the voice of experience.
