Struggling with 2x20@FTP at the End of VO2max Focus

I am really having some very hard time collecting myself and putting out 2x20@FTP, now at the end of week of 14. VO2max work is no problem, I can hit all on target, I do not overachieve on those, I take them exactly to the wattage prescribed. I am also holding 120%FTP on 4x3min(3min) with no strain, but FTP work is now becoming an issue.

I have had several workouts where I failed to complete the second 20min within the directed range. I am in a phase where due to weather I have to mix inside/outside and outside is way way worse for me. Inside is becoming easier to hit the watts.

Can someone share some ideas or experiences related to this. I am 5 weeks away from 2 short course A races that are a week apart. Not sure if this FTP work will settle in time to peak and taper well for the events.

Running, that has been my weakness in the past, no issues, I hit all pretty well on target. Run VO2max phase was very consistent.

Thanks

  • Aleks, this is very common (I'm going through it myself right now, too). A by-product of all the VO2 focus. It usually takes a few weeks to get the FTP mojo back. You should be fine in time for your races.
  •  Thanks Mike for your reply. I guess patience and restraint is in line. It is humbling when I cannot hit the targets outside, given today was very windy, hot and humid, but it did brake me.

I did not have time to comment on your great VDOT test. Awesome job. Looking closer to that VDOT 58.

  • I experienced the same thing. I ended up breaking the FTP intervals into smaller chunks or doing them at 90-95%. It came back though.

  • @Aleks - The result that you are seeting is also an outcome of specificity. You get what you train. When you focus the efforts on short intense intervals, your body adapts and is able to perform better at those workouts. When you then throw in a different type of workout, your body does not perform as well. The OS provides a base to build up strength that can then be transitioned to more traditional endurance workouts. During this transition period you may see some subpar performance on longer pace high intensity workouts. As you move into longer duration high intensity workouts, your body will take the base that you have and begin to adapt. This is not unusual for most people.
  • @Matt and John. Thanks. I will just be patient and pace the start of those correctly, so I don't end up blowing up and ruining the workouts.
