surf trunks as "drag" shorts?

I swim every workout in a pair of long heavy surf trunks - that's just what I like to wear in the water. I am sure they act like a pair of drag shorts, and I used to think that was a good thing, to help build strength. But will it adversely affect my form to never wear actual "swim" suit (jammers or speedo)?

  • I don't know if they adversely affect your form (maybe have someone take a look?) but as an AG triathlete swimmer, I doubt that the ability to apply force to the water is your limiter. Might be better to not overthink the shorts and instead focus on improving your form?

I'm a speedo guy with no issues traipsing around the deck in my banana hammock :-)
  • Why use those shorts to swim train if you're not going to use them to race in? Train like you race!

I wear tri shorts for everything, training and racing, swim bike and run.
  • Good point Scott. I actually do the same, I even do my long rides in tri shorts not bike shorts. So I guess I should do that for swimming too. Might make my 100m intervals look a little faster!
  • In my experience, chlorine does a number on tri shorts. The one's I get are pricey, so I want them to last. I like to wear polyester jammers for swimming. They do well with all the clorine and feel just like tri shorts.

  • I'm wearing "go to the beach" shorts because the last two pairs of Speedo/tri shorts broke down after a few trips to the pool b/c of the chlorine.
  • Wait, if you train like you race you'd never be at the pool with walls, lane lines, and a nice line to follow

Poly square leg will last years and years.
