To RR or to not RR

So here is the situation.  First 1/2 IM coming up in 6 weeks, meaning I have my first RR this weekend.  I'm not sure what I was thinking when I registered for such an early race (it didn't seem early at the time).

I have not ridden my tri bike since Sept.  I have ridden a total of 17 miles outdoors since Sept.  I have a PM which I have never used outdoors other than previously mention 17 mile ride.  (where my power #s were ALL over the place).

Is it a waste of time to do an RR this weekend?  I feel completely and utterly unprepared for this.  I don't even have power #s for outdoors other than somehow manipulating my indoor FTP.  Part of my concern is that biking is by far my weakness and the one leg that I struggle with.  One of my goals this season is to improve this big time.

I'm leaning towards just getting in a solid ride outdoors with a solid brick afterwards. I do have a 1/2 mary next weekend and don't want to completely kill my run legs.

Thoughts?

  • Carly - Sounds like you need all the outdoor riding you can get! I suggest: do the ride outside for the time indicated in the training plan. If it helps you psychologically, don't call it a Race Rehearsal. Maybe just a first read-through, not a dress rehearsal.

  • 2x's what Al said. Try to get out on your bike this weekend - although guessing the weather may not be great - at least on Saturday. Just try to get more miles in outdoors...
  • Carly...you gotta get outside. You gotta get on your tri bike. You gotta ride with the PM. Just don't call it a Race Sim, but get out there (at least on Sunday!).
  • Ok I hear you. I have mapped out a 50+ mile ride for this weekend. At least it will get me back in the saddle. I plan to keep an eye on the power #s to see how they compare to indoor. I'm hoping there is another test week in the plan. As Al said not a full dress rehearsal :-)
  • Good luck Carly. I am feeling the same way. Just finished Boston and with two weeks transition, that leaves me only 6 weeks before my first HIM, and although that scares me, it also means that I have no wiggle room, so every workout must be completed as assigned regardless of weather or circumstances. Yikes. Scary but invigorating as well. Can't wait to hear how your bike goes.
  • Dottie Caitlin is planning to ride from Newton on Sunday. maybe you want to try and hook up to do the ride together.
  • Thanks, Michelle! Carly & I already connected on this, but-yes, Carly, if you still want to ride I am leaving from Nahanton Park Newton at 6am. 56 miles and 1 hour brick after. Text if interested. 617-645-3790. Good luck if notimage
  • Let me add that another guy is riding with me (not EN) but was a member of Boston Tri Team for a long time and has completed 24 ironmans and 1 of 6 or something to do all Placid IMs. Anyway, I totally get that this RR is go like you would race day, so we prob wouldn't be all together, but might be fun to at least be on the same route. Up to you. Hope to see you thereimage
  • Thanks for the push to get outside all.  I won't say it was a race rehearsal, but I definitely remembered how uncomfortable I am on my tri bike!  56 mile bike followed by 6 mile run.  Great weather today.  One of the warmest days of the year here in Boston.

I still have plenty to fix/tweak.  Glad I got out.  Thanks to Dottie and Michele for riding as well!
