IMAZ Tri Camp? Anyone Interested?

In another thread, Greg Perron brought  up possibly putting together our own IMAZ Tri Camp?

Anyone interested in possibly a late Sepetmber camp in Tempe?  All pile into a rental house for the weekend?

Thoughts?

  • Depends on the cost, dates, etc, of course.
  •  Just trying to gauge interest first.  If no one wants to do it then no need to spin cycles.

    Anyone?

  •  I would love a EN IMAZ rally.  But, the Los Angeles Triathlon (Lifetime Fitness Toyota Cup) is on September 25th.  The Janus Charity Challenge has partnered with Lifetime Fitness for the fundraising race as part of that series.  So I am already committed on that weekend.

  • If I can race Alexander......I'm In !
  • Like Jim, I will be doing the LA Tri so that weekend is out for me - but yes I am obviously interested. My brother-in-law Paul would tag along with me too, so count us both in. I would be good late August thru early September. Early October might be better since it is still pretty hot there in AUG/SEP. Maybe that is too late??

Since this is my first IM, I think for my own head (piece of mind) I need to experience some of the ride and run course before race day.
  • OK, howz about the weekend of 9/23 and we all do our RR there?  It will be a week early for an RR per the Plan, but would be fun to be out there with everyone?

  • Or weekend of October 7th?   Arrive on Thursday and leave on Tuesday.  Make it a Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday Big Tri Weekend.  Just drill ourselves into the ground!

    Thoughts?

  • I like either idea.
  • I think this would be a great idea. Not sure I could keep up with any of you, however. I would try to talk my non-EN friend into coming who is also in for IMAZ.
  • The second half of my year hasn't been planned yet (except for IMAZ).

    I've got to figure out:
-do I want a late season HIM?
-do i want to do a local iron-distance aqua bike as my RR?

All I've got scheduled as of now is a few olympics and sprints.

As of now tho, either weekend works for me.
  • I like the idea of doing race rehearsal there
  • Would consider the 23rd. Have to schedule yet another Saturday off but could make it work.
  • There is an open water swimming event at a lake just outside of Phoenix on October 15th.  One of the events is a 4km race.  I was thinking of going for a big training weekend to include that swim and a full race rehearsal on course.  It's 5 weeks out from the race.

    That could be another possibility.

  • Interested! Just done with IMTX -- & having done the course during the IMTX Rally made a huge difference! Knowing the turns & climbs took a lot of the anxiety out of it. Let me know if it looks like this might work. Thanks!
  • I would definitely consider this!
  • Hi All:

OK, time to start nailing this down.  I looked at Terry's suggestion of October 15th.  The lake event (http://tinyurl.com/3p67xv6) is about an hour from the IMAZ Tempe start line.  And you don't start swimming until 8:30 am.  So if we try and do a RR that same day we wouldn't get started on the bike until noonish down in Tempe.  So howz about this:

     - Plan IMAZ Tri Rally for October 14, 15 and 16.

     - Do the swim event on that Saturday.

     - We all do our RR's that Sunday morning early.

    OR

     - Plan IMAZ Tri Rally for October 7, 8, 9

     - Find a local pool and swim and then do our RR on Saturday the 8th (I think that is the actual RR date).

     - On Sunday morning go and drill ourselves with a longish hard bike and T-run on the course.

Personally, I am not so concerned about the swim event.  I would rather bike the course a couple of times and run the course.

I am open to other suggestions for what to do that weekend, but I would like to get the dates nailed down.

Lastly,, If I can get a big house with 4 bedrooms, pool, jacuzzi, etc. that we can use as the "base camp" someplace in Scottsdale, who would want to bunk with me?  Probably around $300 for the weekend each.

  • The 7-9 weekend is better for me, but could probably make either work. I know I will not be as fast as a rider/runner as all of you....will I fit in?

I'd probably stay with a friend that weekend, although the team house would be a good gathering place too. I will probably cut things short on Sunday if I have to drive home that day.

I'm really hoping this works out!
  • The 7,8,9 weekend plan sounds better to me also. I'd be in for the house as well!
@Stephanie - I'm not that fast, either so maybe we could hang together. image
  • I cannot go the weekend of the 7th but if that's fine if that's what everyone decides..I'll just have to miss it. I have a prior committment that necesitates my being there the next weekend. As for the swimming event, I feel like I should do it since I will be there anyway and I had a difficult time on the swim last year. Despite a decent time, I struggled. Where I live I just do not get enough practice in open water and I just do not want to show up on raceday again having really not gone the distance in open water. I am planning on the bike/run RR for Sunday like you said but we could also do it on Friday. Either way the camp should be expected to be a Thursday through Sunday or Friday through Monday thing like the other rallies (4 days, not 3). Long way to go for a day and a half of training. I'll keep following the thread.
  • Janine and Stephanie - We will all be doing our own race rehearsal based on where each of us is at with our FT, HR, etc.  It really won't be a group ride/run.  So no stress on your bike or run pace for the RR's.

The rest of the time we will all do regular riding/running and will just regroup at points along the way.  At least that is how I envision it.

Terry - Bummer, but totally get it.  Let's see what the rest of the group comes up with and we can finalize then.

  • Oct 7 is definitely out for me. The following weekend is a maybe...50/50 at this point.
  •  John,

I would like to try to make either weekend if possible.  Keep me posted and I will try to lock my calendar.

    Andy

  • I could do the weekend of the 17-19th.

    Yano
  • I could do the weekend of the 17-19th.

  • Anyone else going to chime in on this rally? It would be great to organize. What do you think John?
  • I'm out on both those dates. Have to be in Kansas the 8-9 and obligations in the store the 15th. Hope I'll see all of you in November then!
  • I wish I could make it. I think it would be really helpful for the race.
  • Well everyone. DW's plans changed, so my plans changed. Looks like I will be in Phoenix the last weekend of October through the first weekend in November. Unfortunately I won't be able to make a training camp in mid-October. On the plus side, I will be able to do my last RR on course 3 weeks prior to race day which I was able to do last year as well. Cool thing is that last year one of the local tri clubs put on an event to ride the whole 112 miles, on course with full support that same weekend. It was great having aid stations and a tent set up at the beginning/end where you could fill bottles and rack the bike for a quick run. It was only like $25. I hope they do it again this year.
  • @Terry - BTW, how did you get your wife's ok to sign up for AZ again?
  • @David - I ended my OS early and took about a month off to help her with our move to Alaska. Training took no time away from her at all through a house sale/close, packing, movers, a post-mover trip to St. Lucia, and a graduation. Time + trip to St. Lucia + her being sick of hearing how I wanted my revenge on that course + the fact that we were going to the race anyway because her best friend from high school's husband is racing = I get to race!!! image
