Giro Fantasy League

Despite getting thoroughly trounced by Fred Velo in the Spring Classics league (no names, but do the initials CM mean anything to you?), I've gone ahead and formed an Endurance Nation League for the Fantasy Giro d'Italia. It's all free, and (presumably) fun, unless you're Craig M and apparently spend way too much time perusing the minutiae of mid-week race results from Belgium in late March.

To join, you need to do several things:

1. Go to velogames.com. Read the rules, scoring system, and check out the available riders.

2. Create a team.

3. Join our league. At the bottom of your team page, there's a buttom for "join league". Our code  is 28220054.

You can go back anytime up to May 7th to modify your team roster, so don't worry if you don't get it right the first time.

  • Al, It was a very lucky bet on Phillip Gilbert. I'm waiting for him to be stripped, frankly. Sad but true. Crazy strong like that always makes me suspicious. Hope I'm wrong.
The grand tours like the Giro are not so simple. Your horses have to run well for many hard days in a row.
Best of luck to all! This will be a great, and extremely difficult race. Don't wait for the Tour de France. This will be filled with epic-ality and bad ass riders.
  • Chris, you are being too modest ... I picked Gilbert also, as well as Andy Schleck and Matt Goss, and Simon Gerrans, so I had my fair share of podiums. But it was the other guys on your team that were either very lucky or very smart picks, Kolbonev, and I forget who else.

This race, I'm not going to bet against Contador ...

  • Better to be lucky than smart. My super secret due diligence consisted of reading one pre race article before San Remo (?) where a retired pro kind of handicapped things. That's where I got Goss and Kolobnev and Joaquim Rodriguez, et al.

For the Giro, I tried not to pick Contador but couldn't resist. I think the climbers with strong support will do well. I think he'll be on his own a lot but it may not matter if he's still eating the superfoods. image If he was doping (and to be fair to him, it's not at all clear that he was) and he's not now, then there will be no superman climbs where he just dusts everyone.

    Good luck.
  • I'm in - thanks for getting this started Al
  • I am in also. Should be fun, plus it is more reason to watch Versus image
  • It's a make or break team roster move by Fred Velo. They dumped Contador in exchange for a more balanced line up and brought in Mr. Sunshine, Denis Menchov. Menchov completely destroyed Team Fred Velo's chances in the Tour DEE France last year but the team is going with him again because he's an animal and doesn't speak to the press (or anyone else for that matter) and when he falls off his bike in the rain in the tt he crawls after it and gets back on and still wins the overall. We've not seen him at all this year, so he either shows up fat drunk and stupid and kills Fred again, or he shows up on form and is the complete bad ass package.
    Good luck, Fred.
  • That's why I could not pick Cav. What a little whiner.......image
  • Yikes.
Contador is beginning to assert himself. I think my days in the Maglia Rosa are numbered.
  • Oh, if only Bran Tankink hadn't dropped his chain on the gravel ...

Don't count out your pair of Italian Stallions - it is the Giro, not the Vuelta.

  • Contador's attack was beautiful to watch. He is unreal. Wait until they hit the steep climbs. Game over. Wow!

  • On second thought ... seems like AC gelded Scarponi today.

  • Yes. That was clearly the mission. Right in front of the home crowd.
  • In light of the old Postal guys coming clean, I am thinking maybe Contador has a bad day soon. He is so much stronger than these other guys that ride with 6.0 w/kgs that it reminds me too much of Lance and Floyd- just leaving people. I really want to believe he's that good and that strong "naturally" but it feels like wishful thinking, even if he's not on my team. It used to be said that in the grand tours everyone has that one day, where they have no legs, and that you just survive it and minimize the damage. It will be interesting to see if it happens to AC. Still awesome to watch.
  • Maybe Alberto is just smarter than Nibali - he switched to a 36/32 set up mid way thru today's stage, and was obviously pedaling higher RPM up the last 10K. Nibali looked like Ullrich vs Armstrong - just kept going with a low RPM, catching back twice, but not enough time left to catch up after the third surge.

As to looking so much better than everyone else ... well, Basso's not there, to say nothing of Schleck et al who are pointing for TDF.  If he looks like this in July than either he's gotten ahold of Fabian's motor, or Lance's syringes.

I was mad at Ale Jet for a day for quitting "I'm here to help Scarponi...") and losing my point jersey points, but guess who's number one there now?

  • Al,
I really think Contador is just that good and smart and uses little energy until of course he explodes. Yesterday he didn't look suspiciously super human against Niboli, just better. My only chance to hang on to the pink jersey is if he continues to not care about stage wins and my "I" team keeps trying and AC has a very bad day. Has to be very demoralizing for the I team especially with home field advantage. I think we each lost a Bishop with Petacchi withdrawing.
    Chris
  • All hail Fred Velo and his Italian duo of Scarponi and Nibali. If nothing else, at least they were consistent and kept their eyes on the prize they could achieve. The Tour awaits, and I will be sure to fight harder next time.
  • Al,

Thanks, Al but you absolutely had me if your man AC didn't give away stage wins that could surely have been his; maybe even the final TT. Tour de F should be fun.
