Help! Sick w/ 13.1 on Sunday

Supposed to be running the OKC Memorial half on Sunday.  Never planned to race it hard, just a good steady effort and an opportunity to practice some ninja execution (new to me . . . last half marathon earned me an ambulance ride).

Started feeling bad on Monday afternoon . . . mild flu like symptoms, a little achy but no fever.  Also had some upper respiratory weirdness (like a rattle in my windpipe . . . no productive cough).  Saw a doctor on Tuesday morning, told there was no infection and got a B12 shot and was told to stay on Mucinex.  Not much improvement until Wednesday afternoon when I switched to allergy medicine and the symptoms seemed to get a little better (I do typically struggle with allergies this time of year).

Long story short, I still have little energy and my legs are dead . . . hip flexors, glutes, hammys just feel flat.  Have tried a couple of short runs, including this morning, and a 30 minute easy spin, tried two ice baths, lots of roller/stretching, 12 hrs sleep x 2 . . . nothing.  I feel like I could probably run through the upper respiratory stuff, but my legs seem to be thinking otherwise.

So, blow the race off?  Try to run it easy/z1 just for fun?  Any other ideas?  I'll be really bummed if I have to bag it but don't want this to become a multi week thing.

  • You may feel better in the next day or so, bit I almost always err on the side of rest.  It's just a half marathon.

  • See how you feel race morning, no matter what you do its the right call.

This is suppose to be fun.

  • I would skip it. Get better. Do some easy workouts this weekend. Once you commit to a decision then let it go. The what should I do's will be a drain on you. Decide and move on.

  • Be a nutrition rock star (Eat Well) and get some extra sleep...Then...Race day decision based on how you feel and how important that race is to you...
  • Thanks to everyone for their responses, especially Carrie who could probably tell I was beating this to death.  Decide and move on is good advice.

Went back for a follow up with the doc a bit ago and she put me on a asthma-type inhaler for the upper respiratory stuff.  Doesn't think it's bronchitis and should clear up over the next week or so.  Looks like I'm standing down for Sunday . . .
