Achilles pain

So during my run last night, about half way through, I felt this odd pain on the back of my right ankle (well, between my ankle and calf), which I think is my achilles?  Anyway, I quit my intervals and jogged slowly home.  I woke up this morning and it hurts to walk!!!!! Today is just a swim day, which is good, and tomorrow a bike and a short run.  I assume to skip tomorrow's run to let this thing, whatever it is, heal, but Thursday Im supposed to half a 2 hr long run!  What do I do????

Any suggestions with this pain?  Never felt this before.

  • Hi Lauren,

Sorry you are having pain. Sounds like you are having peri-Achilles pain. You'll know when it is Achilles- right along the tendon that starts at the heel. If it is above this and below the calf it is most likely soleus and or gastroc pain. Could also be posterior tibialis. DO NOT RUN IN PAIN. PERIOD. You will save yourself the agony of a long term injury. If I were you I would roll my calf on the TP foot baller. Use the TP ball to get in even deeper. Then stretch in downward dog yoga stretch. Then standing gastroc, soleus stretch. Go on Leigh's web site: Athletes Treating athletes.

You may be due for new shoes?

I NEVER RUN IN PAIN. Sore, stiff muscles are one thing. That works itself out with a warm up. Pain is a NO GO.

You could be pain free by the weekend if you stand down now.

    I hope that helps.

  • Lauren:

Get it looked at now. I'm in week 6 of pain from an achilles tendon issue. Finally seeing a doc on Wed. Complete rest for 2 weeks (twice) has not resolved my issue. I fear my season may be over before it began. If I'd just seen a doc earlier, I might be healed by now. Don't wait.
