Dizzy/Lightheaded

I am hoping someone has some insight into this.  Over the past month I have had bouts of lightheadedness/dizziness.  Well, more lightheaded than dizzy - I don't feel the world is whirling around me really, I just feel a little uneasy and lightheaded.  I don't get it while sitting or lying.  I don't get a "whoosh" or anything when I first stand up.  I get it once I am walking any distance - like in from the parking lot to my office, in the mall, etc.  Up until now I have not had it while biking or running, but today I had a bit of it on my run.

I have tried hydrating well, keeping blood sugar up, I have been on iron for anemia.  If someone has some great ideas, I'd love to hear them, otherwise I'm calling the doctor!

Thanks all!

---Ann.

  • I think you sort of answered your own question, I would call your doctor.
  • ann:

a doc visit is in order, since the workup and proper medical interview can reveal the cause.

in the meantime, be very careful when standing from lying or sitting position, since you could pass out and fall and hurt yourself.  for example, when you wake up in the morning, go from lying down to sitting, to standing, but with more of a pause between the positions.  this will allow your blood flow to equilibrate.

    good luck.

  • Hi!
I am NOT a doctor. Just a music teacher! BUT...I have experienced dizziness usually during seasonal changes.
  • Thanks all for the replies. I have an appointment to see my doctor on Monday. But, Jeremiah, I find your comment interesting. This whole thing started about April 10. I was in Hawaii April 14 - 23 and was totally fine while I was there. Since I have been back, the light headedness has returned. I live in Ontario, so spring is sort of here. Well, late winter really. . . But I have never had this before at the change of season. I will mention this at the doctor's.

  • Good luck at the Doc! I will also tell you that I am a total hypochondriac and it totally freaked me out the first time. Keep us updated!
  • Ann, my case is prob. different from yours, but I was getting dizzy by changing my head positions in March. It started after my hard bike workout and thought it was caused by dehydration, but I didn't get better after a week, so saw a doc. I had the dizziest moment when I laid back in bed or move my head suddenly. I had my blood tested - everything was normal. The doc wasn't 100% sure, but his diagnosis was labyrinthitis. I had the problem for 3 weeks, and dizziness went away. I thought I was totally cured, but realized that something is still wrong because of severe headache I got at plane rides especially at decent just a couple weeks ago. I might have to go back to my doc. too. Hope your doc will figure out what it is. Good luck!
