How Many Calories Burned From Swimming Masters?

Anyone have a # you use for calories burned from a 1 hour Masters swim session (assume 3,500 yards)?    Or a range?

Thanks.

John

  • I would guess 600-800/HR. The water keeps your body cooler than when you are outside and I believe that reduces the cal/burn...not positive on that though.

  • John,
I have been thinking about this for a while, and maybe if I get my wife to buy it for me for Christmas I will be able to get an accurate measure. Anyway Suunto has a memory belt. If you wear a swim shirt so it doesn't come off you can get calories burned because you will have HR data. It is one way to find out. Also 3,500 yards is a decent clip so I would say closer to 700-800. that's what I estimate at 165 lbs and 3,500-4,200 for 1:00-1:30 depending on the practice.
    Thanks,
    JN
  •  Ya, I found a couple of web sites that estimate that based on my size and freestyle swimming "rigorously" for 60 minutes it is ~ 1,000 calories.  Seems high but wanted to see if anyone concurred.  Maybe use 800 calories and call it a day?

  • I totally SWAG, 600 cals/hr, as my run is usually about 800 and bike about 700. I call it 600, done. SWAG, for sure.
