What to do?
Racing Kinetic Half this weekend, looks like first 3 miles or so out of transition is up hill not terribly steep but a good climb out away from the lake. Question: The Guidance says to go in 1st gear, goal watts minus 5%, for first half hour, seem like that would be pretty hard to do in this case. Do I do that or go up the hill in "3rd gear" then go back into 1st gear for half hour to get heart rate down? Just looking for a little more detailed guidance on how some of you might handle it.
Thanks
Bill

I am not sure this map is accurate but I saw this on mapmyride http://www.mapmyrun.com/s/routes/vi...644#climbs
It shows that there is about 110 feet of climbing over the first 6 miles. That is less than a 1% grade. For sure, I would ride it according to the guidance. Even if it were as much as a 3% grade, I would shift to an appropriate gear and slow down to keep it in 1st gear. The only conflict that I would forsee is having to pedal at a low cadence if spinning in even my easiest gear caused me to put out too many watts. In that case, I think I would be willing to have a cadence as low as 60 rpm and live with whatever watts there were (so long as it was less than 3rd gear).
The main point, though, is that IF the map is accurate, the course isn't too steep to follow the guidance.
Thank you. That course looks to be it, if nothing else the first part is accurate since that is only way out of the park. Will follow the guidance. Thanks again.
