Need TX advise for FAI Hip

Saw Ortho yesterday after having left hip pain for several years now, which has gotten to the point that is greatly affecting my training.  Diagnosis was a CAM femur resulting in Femoral Acetabullar Impingement resulting in a a labral tear.

Ortho wanted to do an MRI to confirm and schedule an intra articular cortisone injection to get me through Lake Placid and said at my activity level surgery would be inevitable.

My question is: I'm 11 weeks out from LP,  should I have the injection asap to help my training and risk the results wearing off prior to the race. Or should I schedule the injection 3 weeks out from the race and get on a regular dose of antiinflams now to get me through my training ( I have not been taking any meds for this problem, just a lot of ice/icebaths/ and suffering through workouts) ?

I will train and do LP regardless of symptoms ( will do deep water running or whatever I need to to get through).  I am hoping to qualify for Kona at LP.  I want to do the best possible Tx option that will give me the best oppurtunity to do so.

I would appreciate any recommendation anyone has, except those that would suggest not racing, thanks.

  • How long is the cortisone in the hip supposed to last and when are you eligible for another one? I go through this with my PF. I figure it lasts a good 12-16 weeks. Then again different area.
  • The Doc said I can have only one of these shots in my hip, and there is no telling how long it will last.  That is my dilema.   I think I have decided to have it sooner rather than later, so hopefully I will be able to train appropriately, and then deal with whatever happens down the road.

  • Bob, wow, I went through that exact same diagnosis two years ago. When I had the MRI with the cortisone shot, it made me feel friggin terrific for about a week or two, no more. I definitely wouldn't count on it lasting even 3 weeks.

How bad is your pain? I ended up doing a bunch of PT that was hugely helpful, and learned about footwear choices that really affected my ability to keep training. I went from being debilitated after about 50% of my long runs to running pain free with those changes.

PM me if it would be helpful to chat further.
