Aqua Running

Okay so I have a calf issue I need to deal with and I believe I will not be able to run for several weeks. I was thinking of trying aqua running to keep up some work, but my pool is not very deep (4-5 feet) can I still do it there? Also what belt have others tried with success.

Thanks

p.s. I see doc tomorrow about this.

  • Yes- you should be able to do it in the 5 ft section unless you are super tall. The belt help to give you the clearance you need. I just use what they have at my pool, which is this sort of thing:

But I've heard folks say they like this variety better cause it doesn't ride up on them (although I've never had that problem):

  • Do you consider 5'5" super tall

  • You can still do it...even if you push off the bottom it's not that bad given the relative lightness of being (wet) you. Good luck!
  • Steve - Leigh Boyle prescribed aqua running for me earlier this year and is a good way to keep yourself in shape and still get some so-called running in...

Only thing I'd caution - that happened to me - is that I started off by "high stepping it" too much in the pool. Ended up getting my hip sore. You might want to check for videos of the best way to do. I'll see if I can find the one Leigh sent me.

    Good Luck...
  • @JT thanks, I plan on getting some help before I start. Aqua belt is ordered and should be here this week.

I will also ping Leigh and ask her, I know she is doing TOC this week though.

  • Nemo is also an experienced source of aquarunning, but she's also at TOC. She helped me out a few years ago when I had to do it.
  • Hi Steven -did something to the ball of my foot during track workout this morning, hopefully just a bone bruise, but may be joining you on the agua running bandwagon if it's something more serious:-( The upside, if my n=1 previous experience helps you feel any better, is that I ran a 3,000m PR in college coming off an achilles injury via exclusive aqua running for at least a month. So good luck with it!
  • Sorry to hear about your injury but glad to hear about your experience with it. Belt should be here friday.

  • Steve - sorry for the delay - here's the website that Leigh gave me:

    Hope this helps....
  • I am a professional aqua jogger. ( I know ...so 70's, I mean aqua runner)

If you lean forward , so more on your stomach than upright, your feet won't hit the bottom. drive your leg forward and up and down and back. You may have to decrease how much you extend your knee. Drive with your arms. bring hands back to hip pockets. Drive arms forward and back trying to create resisitance with your upper body. Maybe no fist but hands cupped and pull water back with elbows always at 90 degrees. This will give you a great core workout.

I love pool running. It kicks my ass and makes my hips feel more limber after and my abs get ripped!!!
