White Lake II, NC Race Report
EN did well.
i signed up for both the Half and Sprint Tris. i got 3rd in both last year and "had to defend my title!" the course is basically flat, the lake is relatively warm. WLI had no swim with warm water and cold air putting a heavy fog on the water. WLII started with fog but cleared with a short hold on the race start.
the water temp was 70 degrees and as basically a swimmer it should be easy...but i know my long legs slow me down. so i broke an EN rule. i used a new long wetsuit. i'd only done 2 laps in a pool, but it is obvious my legs were up. it did help; though i must admit i put them on backwards for the half (caught it in the port-a-potty!) for the sprint i put a leg on with the suit thru the arm hole. found that out when i stood up the put it all the way on...a good swim maybe i could have gone harder.
i have a Trek Speed Concept and an Adamo seat. it looks great and lots of strangers have come up to me saying the same. i still feel a bit out of control with clip on shoes but it took two years before i really used the the airobars on my Fugi Aloha and always toe cages, so i'm not doing too bad. on the bike six folks passed me and i passed over 100 (most passed me on the run!). biking is what i practice most at my age to save my legs and not always having a pool. as a new Trek model i must admit some items are not really available to work with the bike (good bento box and frame bottle holders).
i don't run. i jog. in the half my strategy (stolen from a woman competitor i overheard say. "i go from one aid station to the next on the flat coke caffeine.") it seems to work. even at my age all that caffeine gets burnt up and no stop for elimination is necessay! i usually pour the water over me to stay cool but of course that water weight stays with ya in clothes and shoes. this is where i expect competitors to pass me in either tri. there are some good older runners!
i was lucky in these two races. you were either first...or last in my age group of 65-70. i managed first twice.
