I drove the course a few months ago. Unless the course changed from last year, there's a hellish hill that's part of an out & back in the first quarter of the bike. That pretty much made up my mind on what cassette to use.
I did it on a 39/25 low. I didn;t feel overgeared, just took it easy on the hills... tried to keep the same pedal pressure. Plenty of people would pass me on the uphill and I'd pass them again once over the top. I got that execution tip from Rich's 4 Keys talk. I wasn't yet an EN member and that talk really helped!

Compact crank (50/34) with 12/25 at least, if not a 12/27.

I used a 39/27 and I'm 180 lbs. It is constantly rolling and I don't think you can have too many gears.
