Pre- Race: Drove up to my folks with my son on Friday. We spent the afternoon catching up and I didn't have an anxious thought about the race. We drove down to hotel in rush how 95S traffic and surprisingly my stress level stayed low. After checking in, my son and I headed out to grab dinner at Ruby Tuesday's but when we found out it was 20 minutes away I made a turn in the other direction and there was a Pizza Hut. Long story short... I've had the pasta from Pizza Hut before my previous 3 races and I've PR'd each one.
Race morning: I woke up at 330 after a decent night's sleep. I had a Dr. Mercola bar, dates and cup of Yerba Mate tea. I probably could have had more calories and I will correct this before IM Lou. Transition setup was uneventful except I had to buy a race belt that I forgot.
Swim: I was in the 2nd wave so only 3 minutes to wait. To sum up my swim: I can just say I went way too easy. I believe that I sighted the best of any race I'd done and I felt good but for some reason I couldn't push hard.
T1: Uneventful but again a little slow.
Bike: I'll start by saying I deleted my Joule data in a have Sunday morning so I only have 2 numbers from memory to support my feeling that I rode the bike leg the way I had planned. My goal NP was: 1st 30'=180W and the rest = 190W. actual 178 and 188. I had two bottles on the bike. One aerobottle with water and a downtube bottle with my nutrition (mix of Zicococonut water, JJ's organicagave/maplesyrup and natural Yerba mate sports drink). I also had 1 bag of peach tea GU Chomps,1 bag of lemon line (Clif shot Bloks) and a Clif Chocolate Mint gel near the end.
T2: I felt the best I've ever felt coming off the bike. I grabbed my run bottle, turned on my Garmin and took off.
Run: Unfortunately, my Garmin didn't pick up satelilte for half a mile or more and I picked a pace and kept it. Looking at my data I know I went out way too hard so I ended up paying for it in the end. Also, I think I could have taken in more calories. I only had half my run bottle plus flat coke once on the course.
Goal pace: 1st 3=8.00 (+: 30 hills) after 7:30
My run paces: 7:51/7:39/7:04/7:32/8:05/8:05/8:32/8:46/9:33/9:33/9:17/9:05/8:15
Overall: I feel pretty good about my overall results, but I definitely have some things to work on in the coming months.
