VDOT Pace Question

Need some wisdom from those more experienced then myself.

Currently in week 12 of IM Plan...I can't believe LP is only 2 months away.

I completed the 5k VDOT test today and got a 1 point bump in VDOT (54 to 55).  Should I change my paces this late into the IM plan when I am trying to build endurance?  Or should I stick to my old VDOT for the remaining 8 weeks?  I think I can hold the new paces but didn't know if it was the smartest thing to do this late into the year.

Thanks

  • Go ahead and change themm and see how they feel, especially on the shorter runs. I would use the slower of the two for the longer runs if you are concerned, and I would say the slower of the two wouldn't be a bad idea for race day. Typical EN guidance is to use a recent 13.1 time for the IM...so, you can do that IF you have a recent half marathon under your belt. Otherwise, maybe just use the slower of the two vDots and you should be fine.
  • If you have earned it crank up the paces.  Just ensure that you are recovering and are hitting the main sets.

  • A reasonable approach to IM training and racing is: use your best, most recent 5K VDOT for training paces, then use a more conservative (often a half marathon) VDOT for race day.

You want your work to be WORK when training.
