Last Training Week of 2009!
Phew! Let me make it through this week unscathed and things'll be grand! Seriously! This year will not go down in the books as a fave for me. Not by any stretch. So I'm glad to get a shiny new one underway.
It figures we'll be starting the new year with a test week! Oh well, that should provide a nice clean break with the old, and make way for the new.
I've been pretty tired over the last week or so, but getting things back in hand thanks to having only done 1.5 of the interval work on Saturday, and spending the rest of the day napping and eating. Sunday's run went fairly well thanks to that. I'll be down in the pain cave momentarily and will see whether the rest really did help. I think it did wonders for my mental focus, which is a major part of the battle.
So last night I woke up at 2:20-something in the AM and realized that IMSG is flipping 4 months away!! Then I started to freak a little about not having been in the pool since August! Then I started to worry about how those 12 weeks leading up to the race are probably going to be so darned hard and tiring! Whoa!!! I ultimately told myself that RnP know what they're doing and they get people to the start (AND finish) lines of races in fine form. The next thing I remember was waking up at 4:50 to get ready to ride.
Just gotta keep on keepin' on and let all that stuff figure itself out.
Here's to a solid final week of 2009 training, kiddos!

Olivia,
I have been having the same ... Oh my God! It's 4 months to IMSG and I haven't been in the pool nor riding over 2 hours for months.... thoughts......YIKES!! Guess I need to do more of the Saturday outdoor options.
I had a tough week last week too. Was super tired and skipped the Thursday ride, and still had a terrible ride on Saturday. My 30/30's this morning seemed back to normal though. Happy New Year to all!
I sometimes have panic attacks when I think about IMSG being so close on the horizon as we haven't done much LSD (Long Slow Distance), didn't want to get you too excited . But, I know we're on track and we'll see distance added in the months to come. I've been very much encouraged with some of the concrete evidence showing that I"m making progress. My recovery pace for running used to be about 8:00 to 9:00 min/mi but as EN uses the pace running model, the prescribed 7:30 pace is now cake for me. I love my Tues bricks with the Zone 1 at 7:30, it's easy. I've also noticed my heart rate has decreased significantly at that pace, whereas before it was my aerobic threshold. Also, Saturday I did the prescribed brick and felt toast after the bike but when I ran at the super fast prescribed pace as listed by RnP (Sadistic Cruel Toads) I was able to hit it and not kill over.
That was progress for me to say the least. As for the bike, watts haven't changed much since our last testing so I seem to be on plateau but we'll see next week.
Have either of you seen similar progress?
As for the swim I know PnR will have us ready to pull off stellar swims. With swimming we can get our fitness up to par quicker than the other two sports as it is a more forgiving sport requiring less recovery time.
HAVE A GREAT NEW YEAR!
Well done folks! I took a couple of days off this week to do some skiing and sledding with the fam, but will get back on the 30/30 horse tomorrow morning. Am anxious to see how the testing goes next week!
Fred
IMSG folks, you are going to rock it! RnP are going to have you ready to go.
I've been so determined to run every day of this Holiday Run Challenge (yes, I know, even if it has only been one mile) that my prescribed OS work has suffered. Today's 30-30s were cancelled due to a different, entirely more fun reason. Some good friends of ours took us out to a brand-new, buzz-worthy restaurant last night. I was up way past my bedtime and ate (and drank) more than I should. Consequently, my 5 am wakeup call got pushed back until 6, so there was only time to do a 1.1 mile treadmill run and my pushups and pullups. Oops! I work until noon and then we will drive to Dallas to celebrate the New Year with my parents. I'll be back on the program come Monday, just in time for testing!
Have a very happy, very safe New Year, folks! Cheers to a fit, fast 2010!
My biggest thing this week has been trying to get the run mojo back. I finally started to despise the treadmill in the pain cave after last week. And it is bad. Here's how we know. This week has been unusually cold in Denver so all of the snow that we got over Christmas has stuck around. But what am I doing, going outside to run my repeats on the snow. I know that I don't hit my pace targets exactly due to the extra squish under my feet, and there were some times when I had to stop and tip toe across ice patches (like where the creek drained on to the bike path and formed a mini-glacier), but generally I ended up being not all that far off my targets. I couldn't even be bothered to stress about that....being outside was soooo great!! And I'm now feeling like I like running again, thanks to getting out. Last week I thought I would light my TM up with a blow torch. Ahhh the joyful smells of holiday roasting. HA!
Last 30/30s of 2009 on tap at 11:30 MST!! Woo!
OK, I'm rambling. I'm supposed to be working, but clearly not. But I will now....promise!
Looks like everyone had a really good week. Due to a medical emergency in my wife's family I got a break from work and an opportunity to spend some quality time with my 2 kids (silver lining, if there can be one) this past week. I managed to accumulate 60 miles during the Holiday Run Challenge, plus I think get some of my bike mojo back (things have been a bit rough the past few weeks). I am really looking forward to next weeks tests, especially the 5K. I am hoping that the run focus this week can push me past that sub-21 minute 5K.
I spent the rest of the week learning skateboarding, or at least the terminology. My 10-year old son is fixated on learning to skateboard. The issue is that he has grandiose ideas (wonder where he gets that from) that he can do the same tricks as the pros. I am trying to get him to stick with the basics, and put in the blood, sweat and tears (hopefully very little blood) to become a good skater.
Next stop....Race Day. I really enjoyed the EN forums this week, especially Coach Rich's thread reminding us how and why we are all here. I am looking forward to the 2010 season and know that it will be a success.
Best wishes to a all and good luck on your 2010 season!
I cheated a little yesterday and went with Brian (husband) on a 5 mile easy XC ski outing. Good for the SAU balance, and good for the soul. It's quiet, easy, and relaxing compared to all the hard work we do in the haus, and compared to the downhill ski/snowboard scene.
Kristen is the Run Challenge Queen!!
It sounds like we all did some different sports to kick off the new year! Pete is skateboarding, Olivia is XC skiing, and I was playing football! (If you knew me, you would consider this to be highly unusual). Finished up the run challenge yesterday on a sloppy, nasty track near my parents' house. We ate Mexican food for lunch and did a little shopping. Then, Tabitha, Dad and I went out to a nearby field to play a little touch football. We were all on offense and Reese the dog played defense. Dad rolled on the ground but came up ok, T has a bruised thigh, and I jammed a finger, but we had a blast!
Testing coming up this week - are we all ready?
Hey Happy New Year Oct. peeps!!.... Looks like we have made it through the holidays. Truth be told, I have struggled the past week to get my butt out the door to do the workouts. I haven't missed any, but have ended up doing them late in the day because I have put it off all day... Like today. I should be on the bike NOW, but am here instead. Be glad to get back to work as I don't have time to think about if I want to do a workout or not, it is do it now or you won't be able to.... Here is to a great 2010 and great tests next week.... yikes, I get butterflies just thinking about those damn tests!
