Tell me about IMWI special needs on the bike...

Paint me a picture of the setup, how it all goes down, how well you think it worked, etc.  IMWI-specific; not special needs in general.  Haven't decided my strategy yet and how much I want to depend on special needs.  Still a ways off, but it never hurts to think about it as it may affect the hydration system I plan to go with on my bike.

  • What questions do you have? It's at about mile 56, flat road, lots of room to get your bag and get your stuff out before you turn right and climb a short hill. In other words, there's really nothing special about the BSN area/setup at IMWI.
  • Agreed, pretty easy to get in and out of the SN area. I know some people have done it in minutes, especially if you don't ride in with a huge pack. Last year I carried all I needed with me and didn't need to stop. The less moving parts is better theory...
  •  So are all the bags just laid out on tables?  That's how it was at Ironman Switzerland.  Is it easy to spot your bag?  Do people put obnoxious ribbons, etc. on their bags hoping to stand out?  Or are there volunteers you call out numbers to?

  •  I didn't stop at bike special needs but I think there are volunteers to call to. That's the way it was at run special needs.

  • There are volunteers. They will be lined up according to your bib number in descending order (you'll come to the highest numbers first). They have a "spotter" a few yards ahead of the stop who calls out bib numbers as you come through so they can get ready. So just call out your number for that person, roll to about where your bag should be (I seem to recall this being marked- but maybe not- in any case it was pretty easy to figure out approx where your bag was) and then call out your number again. The volunteer will bring your bag to you.
  • Good place to take a pee break too.....while they get your bag.
