Feasibility of Goofy & IMTX in 2012

John and I have talked about doing the Goofy for a while now. I've got the NY marathon in November and he has IMTX in May. Do you guys think it is reasonable for him to do the Goofy the first weekend in January then IMTX in May?

  • My wife Michelle did Goofy this year.  She had a great time and plans to run it again although maybe not next year.  I will say that her training was significant Saturday and Sunday long runs, both 15 miles +.  Even up to 20+ and 12+ on the longest weekend I believe.  I had thought about the 'cost' of training for a race like this.  Goofy training will put you in 100% 'runner mode'.  It would leave very little time/energy on the table for bike training, even OS style workouts.

Now, if you are confident in the bike and know how long it would take to get 'bike legs' on, maybe it would work.  You are looking at not much more than 12 weeks of IM training between the 2 races.  With the fitness from all of the running it might be enough time to recover/transition from Goofy and jump into an IM race.

Most of the responses I get around here are go for it!  And that is my response to you as well.  Certainly with the right attitude, it could be accomplished!  Just my .02, I'm sure some WSM will jump in as well.

  • Penny, I did Goofy in 2010 and loved it. Though that was the year of record lows in Orlando (think wintery mix with wind chills in the upper teens and low 20's). I will do it again, hopefully in warmer conditions. Granted I was not part of EN at the time but I was doing Tri's. The plan i put together was heavy running but I did cross train. I managed to get in1- 2 bikes and 1-2 swims a week with 3-4 days of running. I'm not at home so don't have the plan in front of me. But I think that depending on your goals for the Goofy, mine was to finish, it is doable. The cost might be a slower IMTX than if one had done the full EN OS as directed but that decision is up to you. For me my bike did not improve much but I did not lose anything either. The swimming was mainly for recover after the long weekend runs (10-12 miles on Sat with 18-22 miles on Sun at the peak). I think now that I would adjust the mileage goals to time goals likely modifying the EN Marathon Hack but that is for the next time. A book that might help you set up a plan is one I'm reading now called Run Less Run Faster.
  • Penny, are you planning on racing Goofy, or just doing it for fun? If you do it slow, playing pace (like, pretty much blowing off the half, maybe run-walking the marathon), you might not have a very high recovery cost.
  • Thanks everyone for the replies!

I guess I also need to ask on the other end. Is it feasible and a good idea for me to do NY in November and the Goofy in January (two months later)?

Carly: John is a very strong biker. That is our background - bike racing. I'm not concerned about him getting his bike legs back. He does want to improve his running. Not sure if this is the way to do it though.

Dewey: I heard about that year. CRAZY!

Beth: Honestly, I just want the medals. :-)
  • Penny - My sister did Goofy this year. I ran the 1/2 and her husband paced her on the marathon.

I ran a 3:30 or some other ridiculously slow  time 1/2 mary. We stopped and took pictures with all the Disney characters.

Following the same plan, my sister did the mary the next day and then was fine running around Disney all week. I think this can be a seriously low-key race if you want it to be.

And the medals are so cool! And buy your finisher's first at the expo before they run out!

  • @Beth: that is what I was thinking. Just do it for fun, the medals, and the finisher's gear! Thanks!
