Comparing TT results in a 20 yd vs. 25 yd pool

I joined a new pool a few weeks ago...it is a beautiful 25 yd pool at a local college. Up until then I was swimming at the local Y in a 20 yd pool.

I just did a 1,000 TT in the 25 yd pool and was depressed to note that I had not really improved at all from the TT I did after 8 months of no swimming. I figured I'd be in for a huge improvement given swimming 3x/wk for the past month and a half.

Do you think there is any possibility that my paces should be slower in the 25 yd pool?

I do not do flip turns or make pushing off the wall a major part of trying to get speed (i.e. I do not do a super-forceful push and glide), although I certainly do push off the wall.

Thoughts??

  • If you're pushing as far off the wall in both pools, then you're clearly "swimming" less distance in the 20y pool, and more in the 25y pool, since you're only getting 40 wall pushes in your TT rather than the 50 you were getting before. Even without a "big" push you're still likely moving at your fastest coming off the wall. I'm definitely slower in a 50m pool than a 25y pool because of this.

That said, you shouldn't over analyze it. Write down the TT time, get on with the training plan, and the next time you do a TT do it in the same pool and you'll have a clean baseline for comparison. I bet you'll be quicker.
