Last minute pacing question before this weekend's HIM!

So I thought I was all dialed in for a pacing strategy for Quassy this weekend, and have a recent vdot from a half marathon that I am comfortable with.  EN pacing guidelines worked great for me in that stand-alone half marathon, by the way.

For this weekend's race, I was planning on going with MP + 30" for first three miles, etc...  Using my vdot from the half marathon, and the guidance in the wiki.

Then for the heck of it I decided to listen to the long course run guidance podcast today, and out of nowhere I discover the % pace charts - suggesting I need to dial down the MP I was planning to use, unless I have a perfect day!  Now I'm totally confused!  I've never seen this chart anyplace else.  Is it an idea that was abandoned by R&P, or should I look at it and figure out a realistic % pace to use?  Or just go with the MP from my half marathon vdot??

Race is Sunday!  Thanks for the advice.

  • Go with what you had mapped out. MP+30" for 3, then MP after that...let the reigns go for the last 3.
  • Thanks Steve. That's what I'm thinking unless others chime in with additional advice. I could always slow down a bit if RPE or HR get too high I suppose.
  • What Steve said. Now Go to bed and rest well!
  • Good advice Nemo. By the way, I listened to your "Meet the Team" interview on a run earlier this week. Great interview!
  • HA HA HA! Wow, that one is pretty old! Nice to know folks are still enjoying them.

So how did the race go?
  • Pretty good, I think. Tough course though. Constant steep up and downs on the run made for tough pacing. Ended up going with HR and RPE more than my pace. I'll post a full report hopefully tonight.
