ftp test on climb

Hey all, FTP test this eve.  Hard to get 20' worth of flat road, but I can do an extended climb for that time.  That ok?  power is power, right?

  • I find even on the same bike in same position I can put out more power going up hill so I would say to try and find as much road that is close to flat as possible.
  • Hopefully coach Rich will chime.  I have seen posts in the past the same at Matt's in that the hill climbing FTP is higher that a flat 42' test.  I'm not sure that there is a particular % that you can take as this is personal.  So without having flat 42' test to compare to this might be difficult but I'll leave that to more experience power users and those that actually have hills where they live.

  • What Matt said. My Tues regular workout is 3x 5k up a 5-6% hill, takes me 19-20' each time. I swag it and take 5% off my Pnorm for that climb and call it my FTP. Good enough for flat or hilly training, though likely hill. I would knock it down 5-10w for the purposes of calc'ing race wattage. Short answer is that it's good enough
  • Well lets roll on up to the sidewalk and take a look, yeah. whoa!!! Not so wild, but 225 watts worth of FTP. I'll roll with that.
