How long to stay in first gear?

I'm getting ready for the Lake Placid rally and RR on Friday, and was reviewing the racing with power guidance.  There is conflicting information on how long to stay in first gear at the start of the ride.  30-45 min?  90 min?  What's best?  I did see that I should use gears 3 and 4 on the hills, even during this early easy phase.

Thanks.

  • Generally your first 60-90 minutes should be easy and then you should dial into your remaining gearing. What end of the spectrum you are on should be dependent on your fitness/experience/expectations. If it is your first IM, I'd suggest 90 minutes, if you have experience and are trying to place you might want to only do 60. Just remember, you have that marathon thing after the bike image don't booger it for a measly 30 minutes!
  • I've read / followed 30-45 mins.
  • I recommend you ask Patrick at the camp. LP has some unique terrain and it would be good to wait until after that to start dialing it up a bit.
  • I've got nothing to add except this thread does bring back memories of a great old Beach Boys tune.

I'm gonna wake you up early
Cause I'm gonna take a ride with you
Were going down to the honda shop
I'll tell you what were gonna do
    Put on a ragged sweatshirt
I'll take you anywhere you want me to

First gear (honda honda) its alright (faster faster)
Second gear (little honda honda) I lean right (faster faster)
Third gear (honda honda) hang on tight (faster faster)
    Faster its alright.

    Keep smiling.
  • Thanks for the input guys! Al! I did ask Patrick today, and in case you're wondering he suggested 60 min today, since we are all somewhat fresh. On race day, 90 min may be better since we are coming off the swim. Tomorrow, since we are doing 112 miles again, after today's 112, he suggested 90. Guidelines for noobies like myself anyway. Great day today in Placid!
