Testing question

I have a question about testing with my heart rate monitor. How do I figure Average HR over a interval or test? I think I am reading more in to it, but is it really as simple as I think?

Not sure what HRM you are using.

I use Garmin 305. I can get average HR for lap/ entire workout/ test/ whatever. I see it when I download and enter the appropriate number in the data tool.

I have a basic Polar HRM that allows me to set zones but there is no average for the workout.

How old? I have an old one that has zones, but it also tells me kcals and average HR also but I have to scroll down a bunch with one of the buttons on the right side of the watch.
