ironman 2012. northeast america.

For 2012, thinking of doing new jersey or quebec or lake placid.   Near family.

New jersey and quebec signups this coming wednesday.

If we wait until July to sign up for lake placid, can I be assured of getting a spot online?

Or should we just go for get new jersey or quebec while there is a chance?

  • I'd put money on 2012 being the last year for IM Lake Placid. Contract expires in 2012... IMMT 2.5 hours from Lake Placid.... IMNYC 5 hours from Lake Placid and (arguably) in the same state... and all within four weeks of each other.
  • Only a few online entries were available the past two years for LP. Online sold out in 20 minutes, best bet is being there.
  • This year offers WTC a true test of the size of the market for IM races in the NorthEast. My personal opinion is that the market will prove to be large enough to sell out or nearly sell out all 3 races even though they are closely spaced in time and location. I doubt LP will sell out in minutes this year though...IMMT and IMNYC will pull market share away. But I also doubt that 2012 will be the last year for IMLP just because there is competition to the north and south. I just don't see WTC pulling the plug on the first IM in the continental United States. All that is required for LP to continue is 1) Lake Placid still wants to host the race, 2) IMLP achieves at least 2,000 registrations for 2012 even with the competition, and 3) WTC wants to continue making money. If the answer to all 3 is Yes, then expect another 5 year contract. If anything, the most tenuous issue for Lake Placid is community support. I've read on ST that locals are getting downright tired of triathletes because of the endless training camps held in the vicinity, biker trash, road congestion, obnoxious athletes, etc. Still, I think economic interests will win the day in a community that lives/dies by tourism.
