Bento or FuelBox Placement Strategies

I am new to Bento (actually I bought a FuelBox) box and placement strategies.  I have assumed all along that having it placed in the forward position, directly behind the stem, is the most aero.  I don't like it there.  Cable housing, stem, etc. all in the way of getting the FuelBox snug and in place.  I want to move it to the rear of my top tube and anchor it to my seat post.  My question is...will there be an aero penalty for making this move?  I carry only tools in it and I don't need to access it while riding.

  • If you are not needing to access the bag, just get if behind your seat on the underside. Or, you can put the stuff in your pockets, or a water bottle. I have never seen one stashed how you are thinking, but, it doesn't seem 'clean' looking to me...if that matters to you.
  • I think your legs would possibly rub on the box if it's mounted on the rear of the TT. There wouldn't be any aero anything one way or another. Your frontal area is WAYYYY bigger than that little box.
  • @Jim, I think the area you described behind the stem is the most beneficial (or least costly) and it's usually out of the way. Maybe post a pic of your bike's front end so we can see what issues you are having?
