My first road bike!

I finally got a road bike - actually a cyclocross bike, but it cost more than my tri bike so I'd better be getting two bikes for the price of one!  Focus Mares CX1, all carbon, SRAM Force hardware.  I'd actually ordered a CX2, but when it was delayed my LBS gave me a complementary upgrade to a CX1 (minus the carbon wheelset).  That's on top of the discount they gave our local cycling club for the group order from Focus - LBS for the win!

I'm grateful for all of the forum posts and links on road cycling codes, and will do my best to adhere.  I will inevitably be breaking Velominati rules 33 ("Legs shaved at all times") and 34 ("Mountain bike shoes are for mountain bikes"), and as you can see I've chosen to break rule 74 as well ("PowerTaps are only for pros"), at least on this ride.  What worries me most is having no group riding skills.  Do you think I need to start with some "C" rides to learn the group skills, or would it be better to go with the "B" group but just stay a safe distance off the back to start with?

  • Nice ride! Given your 3.5w/kg I'm pretty sure you'll be bored out of your skull in a C ride group... Maybe even a in B ride group if they're anything like where I ride... Have fun! You'll be fine.
  • Sweet! Enjoy it. But you need to learn one more rule. Bike pics must always be taken with the drivetrain side facing the camera. Turn that bike around :-)
  • @Nemo, LOL, yeah, that was a "d'oh" moment when I went to post the pic.
  • Congrats on your first road bike! Hope you enjoy racking up the miles on it!

    Haha

  • Sweet ride... Enjoy!

  • Join B and stay off the back until you're comfortable, but remember you get comfortable in a group by BEING in the group, so don't be afraid to join in further ahead in the group.

Like John said, with 3.5 w/kg, a C ride would bore you and/or you'd be smashing them by being at the front.
