Motor City Triathlon at Belle Isle, Detroit
A very good race this past Sunday.
Swim 1500M - 25:09 (1:03PR)
Went into the water with short bike ride and a mild warmup swim. Water start - I lined up well with the bouys. After the gun it took me about 3 minutes of jostling to get space to swim. And sighting went well up to the first turn. I went a bit wide after that and lost maybe 30 seconds overall, but I made up a bit by sticking on some fast legs for about 400 meters which helped pick up my turnover speed. I grooved the rest of the distance and had a strong run out of the water into transition.
T1: Still lost a bit of time with the wetsuit. I have an Xterra Vortex3 which is ankle length. It's nice when we have cold starts here in Michigan, but I'd trade colder ankles for 30 seconds in transition. Faster than last year and my previous race, so getting better with practice.
Bike 23.2 Miles - 1:03:32 (1:24PR)
21.6 MPH a reasonable gain over last year. I really played the gears well on the windward side of the island. A consistent speed for all four laps and I was able to negative split the whole way. Next year I will definitely push it harder to really see what I can do.
T2: 33 seconds. Felt like a pro.
Run 6.6 Miles - 49:17 (1:40PR)
This is what earned me the right to speed up the bike next time. I felt like I was in reverse for the whole run. My cadence was really up from the bike and I had a very hard time slowing down my legs. 7:36 was my pace to set, but I kept dipping low. I was pushing 6:50 for a while. Really weird. Anyway, I positive split the run by 20 seconds although I had enough juice to sprint for the last quarter mile. I think Iearned the right to speed on the bike next time as long as I execute better.
So, what would I do differently? I'd carefully read the results at least twice because I thought I was 5th in my age group, but it turned out I came in third, so I left early and they're mailing me my award.
