Buddy wants a road bike...

I've got a friend that wants to start riding.  He's already a runner, so he's in pretty good shape.  He said he would be willing to spend around 1500.00.  Any suggestions on a good road bike?

  • for $1800, the Wilier Izoard XP on competitive cyclist is hard to beat. Another option is their Pinarello FP1 105 build within his price range.

As far as stuff you can buy at the bike shop, find the best frame you can get with a 105 or Rival build, and go for it. Hard to go wrong with any of the major brands.
  • Aluminum.

    Specialized Allez

    or

    Cannondale Caad.

Really can't go wrong.  Can get a nice APEX build for the price too.

  • +1 on the Specialized. Both my tri and road bikes are entry-level ones and I've been really happy with how they are built. Felt I got a good bang for my buck image
  • I have a good friend who rents high-end bikes in Santa Barbara. He gets all of his stock from Ebay. If you're patient you can get a great bike for less than half of what you'd pay new. Just sayin'...

  •  +1 on what Rich said...

I've bought or helped people buy ~8 bikes in the last yr on eBay and got a good deal on every one with a little patience.  Every one was in very good condition.  You can get a sweet 2-3yr old Carbon Fiber bike from any of 10+ brands with any combination of SRAM or Shimano components for $1,500...  Less likely to get an off market price on a Cervelo, but can find others if you search by multiple different strings and hope to find one that wasn't listed properly...

  • Thanks guys. He ended up getting a caad 9 I believe from eBay. It's coming in this weekend so I'll take a look at it then.
