Next Years Ironman - Recommendations?

Hi - am humming and hahing about next year's ironman.  As background I did IMNZ last year (2010) and am doing IM Regensburg this year, any recommendations for next year? Am thinking maybe time to do a North American race, but which one? Failing that maybe Austria or the new one in Wales (will be 2nd year then).

As a background I am "of a solid build" so therefore prefer flatter bike courses where I can sit on the aeros and churn out bigger watts. Wetsuit versus non-wetsuit swim not an issue. Run don't mind some rolling hills but flatter is better - main thing for the run is even though I train in the heat being a bigger guy am not as efficient in keeping body temp down, therefore would prefer somewhere without too much humidty and with lower temps.

From a SAU perspective would prefer a destination race where can have a week or two holiday in the region after.

So what says the haus, recommendations welcomed!

  • I am Ottawa Canada and prefer the hilly type courses for the challenge. I did IMFL 2010. For me a waste of sweat and time(no recommend). If you come to NA IMLP, Mont Tremblant for the beauty of both areas and have alot of tourist things to do and see in both towns. For the midwest Wisconsin might be up your ally. Check the charts for terrain ascent/decents. Nothing like a challenge out of your comfort zone to get you motivated. I hope this gives you some insight to your decision making cheers Steve
  • What time of year is going to be the best for you to do the training leading up to the race and to take the time off for the race itself? Can you narrow 2012 down just a little?
  • @Steve - hear you about the challenge aspect. Guess first couple you just wanna finish so go for easier races maybe? Definitely may be time to step up the challenge aspect a little at least.

@Nemo - sorry yeah was a bit vague on that image I live in Singapore so am blessed with year-round outside training weather, the weather really doesn't change here through the year so any time works (only issue is it's always almost too hot and humid). That being said am starting a new job in Nov so something not too early in the year would be best - but most of those are full already I guess. So in terms of timing an pretty flexible but probably July to Sept timing maybe, but if something fits better that could be adjusted.
  • Kevin - based on your requirements, you want either Arizona (1st choice) or Florida (2nd choice). See you in Regensburg!
