Pairing Joule 2.0 with Garmin cadence/speed sensor

so after 6 months i finally realized that my garmin ANT+ speed/cadence sensor isn't paired with my joule, tried to pair it, no luck. did some web searches and all of the information says that you can't pair the combo units with a joule, but that cycleops may have been fixing that.

questions:

-has anyone had any luck pairing a Garmin combo speed/cadence sensor with a joule 2.0?

-does anyone know if cycleops has released updated firmware for the joule 2.0 that solves this issue?

-since the sensor isnt working, can anyone explain to me how the Powertap/Joule 2.0 computes speed, distance, cadence?

-there doesn't seem to be anyplace to enter wheel size, only for speed sensors... so how accurate is the distance/speed calculation?

-what cadence & speed sensors would one get to work best with the joule?

  • I have a Garmin speed/cadence sensor on both of my bikes, road and tri. Each time I swap the crank, I have to "activate" the other one.

It shows up as a speed sensor on my Joule, not as a cadence sensor - even though it does both. Try it that way.
  • i did try to pair it is a speed sensor, no luck, can you tell me what version of sofware you have on the joule?

  • i just upgraded to the latest and greatest 14.063 and still nothing. after further investigation i see there is a selection to add speedcad sensor, did that and voila! have both bikes connected to the joule.

next question, did you measure your wheel circumfrence or go with a standard #?

  • Scott,

I just dumped my joule and went back to my Garmin, but you nailed it, in order for the Garmin Speed/Cad sensor to work you need to have the newer firmware and pair it as a SpeedCad sensor. I actually found that really annoying, because then it would use the SpeedCad sensor's cadence over the cadence from my Quarq so I had to mount yet another useless magnet.

Anyway, as to your wheel circumference question, I believe I always left mine to the default setting, but it is well known that the Joule's calculation of distance is off pretty much regardless of what you have the circumference set to. Saris addressed this in the latest beta firmware but it is not yet publicly available.
  • Trevor,

I had issues with the Speed/Cadence sensor and finally got it working a few months back and haven't messed with it since as it "just works". I feared the Cadence was coming from the GSC10 and not the Quarq. Maybe they will fix that at some point in the future...

But confirm that you need to add the SpeedCad and then you get Speed to display...
