Please help a friend with ITB issues

Hey WSM,

I have a good friend who is suffering with ITB. I spoke with her today at church, and asked her the usual questions about new shoes, cadence, stretching, therapy etc...

She is a personal trainer who does yoga, stretching, weights, and whatever else you can think of. Absolutely no ITB issues with any of those activities, but even after taking 2 weeks completely off of running, she has extreme pain when she tries to run anything over a mile? Says she has no pain when running on a treadmill, or walking just when running? She says she has to run in a shoe with a lot of support because of having pins in her foot from a previous surgery, and can't try barefoot, vibram or other less cushioning shoes for the same reason.

Thing is she is part of our upcoming relay, and we would really like to get her back healthy. I am referring her to Leigh's site, and talking to her about her cadence, but not sure what else to look for??

Thanks,

  • Scott I had bad ITB issues a couple of years ago. Did all the stretching and things even took 2 months completely off. Only thing that really help me was an IT band compression strap (http://www.runningwarehouse.com/descpage-ITBAND.html) though not a good idea if the band is still inflamed. The other thing that helped me was shortening stride and increasing cadence moving me to more of a mid-foot strike. Do not know it that helps but my issues are gone. Good luck with the ITB and the relay.
  • 2x on Leigh's site. Foam rolling and IT band specific stretching PLUS some heavy work by my favorite ART Professional and core strengthening has made the difference for me. The ART THERAPY may work quick enough to get her ready for the event. Best of luck!
  • Yeah, if it's really bad ART/clinical massage are probably necessary before rolling and stretching are going to do anything. And rest. I had some similar ITB issues a few years ago and it eventually knocked me out for a couple of months, but doing the massage, then going into stretching and rolling finally fixed the problem. Definitely want her to get that worked out by a professional. Good luck!
