Goggles

Leaky goggles, I did a 1.2 mile swim last week with my leaky goggles, the left side. I went out and bought a new pair, 16 dollars worth ridicules, anyway I had my RR swim today and the new pair is worse than the old !!!

I had a few replies as your best recommendations to swim goggles and thought to post this to get the REST of EN's best choice for a swim goggle sooo. any input would be appreciated.

Thx D

  • Speedo Speed Sockets work for me. I just replaced a pair that was three years old. No leaking problems at all. I train and race in them.

  • I like Aquasphere Kayenne, HOWEVER that's what works for me goggles are extremely personal. You'd be best off to go to a shop and try a bunch on to see what works with your face. A good shop will have people that know how to fit them and can make recommendations based on your facial architecture.

Things to figure out: Do you have deep eye sockets, are they narrow or wide, is your face more flat or curved? These things may make a difference when selecting goggles..

Also, have you tried a swim with a freshly washed face vs. throwing them on after sweating and such?

And remember, no fit is going to be 100%, I believe Michael Phelps did one of his gold medal swims with a leaky set of goggles.
  • Like Cary said, everyone has their own pair of favorite goggles that they swear by but it's highly individual. A lot of people love Aquasphere's but they never worked for me. FWIW, I went through 5 or 6 pairs of goggles before I ever found one that I truly liked, the BlueSeventy HydraVision.
  • I found the best for me are speedo super seal goggles. I think they just started making them again. I tried about 10 different types before I found one I like. When you find one, buy several pair - you never know when they may discontinued.
  • A key tip: adjust the nose bridge width if you can. Any pair of goggles can be made to be leaky with a bad nose fit.

I am limited with my goggle choices, since I need "optical" goggles, and I buy the speedo vanquisher optical ones. (For an extra few bucks over the regular ones, they come with lenses that ....sort of... work like glasses) It comes with 4 nose bridges, of which the 2nd largest is pre-installed. I have to go to the 3rd largest, and then I am golden.

The other caveat is to avoid the goggles with old-style foam padding, but I doubt you are using anything like that.
  • These are the best googles I've ever owned. They are large without being gigantic, soft outer material that forms an awesome seal and reseals easily when they get knocked a little by the lane markers (so i've heard). They are a little more expensive, but well worth it. TYR Nest Pro Nano

  • My son (a high school swimmer) also digs the TYR Nest line, though he has recently taken to swimming with Swedish style goggles.
  • Just remember to NEVER do a tri wearing swedes. I used to swim in swedes for one reason or another until I took them out into a sorta-race OWS, the 2.4 mi MOWS last year on the IMWI swim course. As soon as the gun went off I took a high elbow to the eye socket and the entirely rigid, padding-free swedes delivered all of that kinetic energy straight to my eye socket and voila, instant black eye.

  • I like the TYR technoflex 4.0 metalized, but I went through about 7 different kinds before I found them... Slightly better fit for me than the Nest Pro... http://www.tyr.com/shop/technoflex®-metallized-goggles-p-855-c-68_70_72.html
