Elbow pain while swimming

Hi medical people,

I've started to have some pain in my left elbow while swimming.  It happens during the pull while my arm is under water mostly, but can happen on occasion when my arm enters the water.  I don't think that my arm is too straight, which may cause some hyperextension.  If I knew what tennis elbow was I'd say it feels like that, but I've never had tennis elbow.

So the question is, how do I fix it/minimize the pain since I have about a month before LP and feel that I can't take off from swimming?  Would a neoprene sleeve help?  other options?

Thanks-Keith

do you experience the pain near the end of your workout? what side of te elbow is the pain? when you say your elbow is not straight, does ur hand point towards your waist, when you straighten it out at the side, or does ur hand point away from ur body? any tenderness? do you have good grip strength, with no pain at the elbow? and more importantly, do you remember ay injuries?
I would not go with a neoprene sleeve

  • The pain is on the inside just about 1/2 inch from the bone you feel (ulna?). I feel it when I'm pulling on the water- my arm is usually bent about 20-30 degrees at this point of my stroke, so my palm is facing down. It was tender right after, but that went away within 3-4 minutes. No loss of grip strength. It was right in the middle of the workout. No injuries that I know about
  • Keith,
what you're describing is probably in line with a minor tendinitis, vs capsular strain.
I would drop your swiming intensity one notch, just for a week, and then see how it goes form there. Don't foresee it being a problem for you at LP. Also, ice after workouts is a bonus.
If the pain persists, need to stop immediately.
just out of curiosity, can you do push-ups? any poain?
  • Thanks for the help. Just dropped down and did some push-ups without pain. Can't say that I do push-ups regularly (and now I know why). I'll take it easier in the pool- I need a reason to focus on my technique anyway.

    Thanks again.
