Tool box attached to aero bars: illegal fairing?

I was trying to streamline my bike setup and haven't been really happy with my bento tool bag behind the stem. I am thinking that I would like to attach an aero box to the bottom of my aero bars. It would fill the entire gap between my bars. Would this be legal or viewed as an aerodynamic fairing?

  • I would be highly surprised if it was deemed a fairing. First, WTC/USAT don't enforce UCI rules. Most of the new super bikes that are legal in the tri-world are illegal in UCI racing. Who care's what UCI says? Second, the evolution of front mounted hydration systems is moving towards mimicking a fairing to clean up the air around the headset. Stick it in there!

There is a size limit, TJ had to take apart this at Kona.

What the heck is that thing - a carbon fiber aero feed bag???

Yeah, that's TOTALLY a fairing. Looks like a motorcycle windscreen. Can't believe he thought he'd get away with that.

  • Thanks. I will go for it.
    That TJ setup is crazy!
  • You have to really push the envelope to get WTC to crack down on a bike, but that set-up had a neon flashing light yelling UNFAIR!  Looked like the top cover was based upon a small crotch rocket windshield.

Should have just gone for the recumbent if he was going to put something like that on there.

HA HA HA!! That's hysterical! Make fun all ya want, but if he had gotten away with it you know you'd all want one!

  • My experience has been the USAT and WTC both put significantly more focus on enforcing the rules for PROs than AGers, before, during and after events.

Before the race, I've heard of the officals looking at every bike on the Pro transition rack over night at an ironman, but just casually walking by the AG racks to look for anything that really sticks out.

During the race, the officals by the AGers are pretty much just looks for obvious drafting/packs and other offenses. Again however they pay much more attention to the rules for the pro race and will have a stopwatch ready to time a pass.

To me there is nothing at all wrong with your idea and I would just giving it a try. As long as the purpose of it is to store tools that you would normally have you may as well make it aero. Just keep it within reason and don't make somehting like TJ did and you will be totally fine.
  •  Thanks again all. Here is a pic of what I did.

  • I like, simple and looks effictive. Can you take a front picture as well? Also, show us how you attach it?

If I needed to care more stuff I would consider borrowing your idea but my bento box holds everything I need.
  • So how does the weight affect the handling? I am still on the fence about my aero bottle since it changes the feel of the bike, esp when full. I like the idea of stashing stuff out of the way like that, though.
  • Or everyone could just go buy a Trek Speed Concept with the convenient draft box.
  • @Matt - Sure. I will take some more/better pics tonight when I get home. My bento was always bulging and would hit my knees. I guess I could learn to take less stuff but I like the fact that I can fit anything I may need (for peace of mind). I am also hoping that it will clean up the air in that area. Because my bars are angled up slightly the air was just hitting straight into my very un-aero stem area and cables.

@Sam - I have only had it on a quick ride to test it out. It didn't really affect the handling any. The stuff I carry isn't all that heavy compared to water. I will need to test it out on my long rides this weekend to really get a sense of how it feels. I will let you know.

@Bob - From what I've heard I think my solution holds more stuff, but I'm totally down for your idea. Just need to win the lottery first image
  • I can jam a fair amount of crap in my draft box. 1 tube, 2 CO2's, air chuck, 2 tire levers, multi-tool, latex gloves, and there's something else I'm forgetting. I haven't figured how to get two tubes in there. That second tube gets tucked under my seat.
  • Here are some more pictures.

I simply drilled some holes in the container and zip-tied it to the aero bars (you can see this in the top-down picture). It doesn't move around at all.

I was also able to mount my garmin to the top as well so that it is all integrated and as low as possible. It sits right between my hands and is sheilded nicely.

  • What kind of container is that?
  • I have the same question as Brandon. But my reaction to your set up is "AWESONIUM!"
  • That's very nice. I think the powers that be would consider that a fairing but they don't pay much attention to AG bikes.
  • Sorry, totally spaced the container. It is a cage rocket http://www.cagerocket.com/. Happen to just have it from a long time ago.
