Time between swim and bike on "big day" workouts?

What's the guidance on how long T1 can, and should, be on our Big Day workouts? Due to the location of where I'll be swimming, I need to drive about 10 minutes to get to where I can hop on the bike, so including admin time T1 will likely be 20-30 minutes. Is that too long?

  • Jason,

You will be fine.  Ideally right out of the pool, 15-20 minutes decent.  If you have to drive further you can.  Basically just minimize the time as much as possible because you need to swim.  Below is the wiki big day guidance.

For what it's worth I had to do the 25-30 T1 last year.  It's not perfect but better than not swimming at all.

  • It really wont make any difference
  • Yeah, I didn't even do the big day because it just wasn't feasible in the city. Bike to run is obviously the big transition. You'll be fine whatever you end up working out.
  • Jason - I did a BIG day on the advanced plan two weeks ago. My T1 was roughly 3 hours. I wanted open water instead of a pool and that meant 40 mins to the beach. Can't go to the beach without the family. After I was done swimming, we went to breakfast at a beach cafe. Then drive back home and started my 4.5 hour bike at noon. T2 was very short though. I plan on repeating the big day in a couple of weeks with the same scenario. SAUs are more important than T1.

  • Thanks for the replies everyone. I drove the course this evening that I'll be doing tomorrow, my drive from the lake to where I'll park to ride is actually closer to 5 minutes. I can probably get through T1 in about 20 minutes, I'm fine with that.
