Crazy thirst using infinit with high electrolytes

I've been using Infinit for my long weekend workouts and have been encountering a high level of thirst in the last quarter of the workout. My Infinit mix is set to 650/hr. I just feel like I need to drink and my mind gets crazy for water. I have tried increasing the amount of fluid I am taking in but can't seem to get rid of this feeling. Am I gettting severly dehydrated or is this something to do with the sodium intake?

  • 650 what per hour?
  • Sorry, sodium 650mg/hour.

  • Are you getting enough water during the week before these workouts? I find that if I do long rides but haven't been drinking adequate water in the days leading up I notice that I'm taking in tons more than I normally would need given the conditions.
  • I think I am getting enough fluids during the week. I keep a water bottle at my desk and drink all day. I will keep an eye on that though.
Another observation: When I do shorter rides I have been using the Powerbar Perform in an attempt to get used to it. I don't seem to get the thirsty feeling from this but I am not sure if it is just because the rides are shorter.
  • so here is a silly question...you feel thirsty but are you actually dehydrated (what color is your pee?/ headach?)...Your mix of infinit has a decent amount of sodium in it which could be causing you to feel more thirsty than you are actually dehydrated. Just a thought. My mix has 500mg of sodium per serving and I don't have this issue. I also take water completely seperate for my long rides. Not just the protocal of A few sips of infinite concentrated bottle followed by water: but I drink water purely for hydration and not just to dilute my mix...
  • David, I do not use Infinit but had a similar thirst issue with Perpetuem. Talked with the folks at Hammer and they said that is was the protein so do you have protein in your mix? For me I corrected this by increasing the amount of water that I drink with the concentrated Perpetuem(1 sip concentrate 2-3 big sips of water).
  • @Dewey - Interesting. I do have a small amount of protein. I will try upping my water intake more and see if it helps. Thanks.
  • 650mg / hour of sodium sounds like a lot of sodium. My infinit is set to 450mg / hour which works great and I have no symptoms of excessive thirst on long rides. I also have protein in my mix.

  • @Steve - I was going with the recommended intake of 500-1000mg/hour that RnP have given. I always feel pretty good and haven't had any cramping with this level. The only thing I had noticed was the thirst issue. I am pretty sure that I need to just increase my fluid intake at this point. It might have been the increase in temperature lately that threw me off. I will continue to test this mix out and if I need to I will drop down the sodium and see if that helps.
  • On the Sodium per hour, 500-1000 mg/hr is a very commonly quoted range. I wouldn't call 650 mg/hr a lot...
