Infinit on bike rides

Im new to infinit use, so I have a quick question with using it on long bike rides.

Say I have a 4 hour scheduled ride.  Living in the suburbs of Illinois, that usually means 4:15-4:25 total time on the bike (4 hrs rolling, plus stoplights, etc.)  Do I put enough for 4 hrs in my bottle or 4 and a half since that is how long Im out there for?

Thanks guys and gals image

  • I mix for the total time spent actually riding the bike, not sitting at lights because you aren't burning (significant) calories while stopped.

    Quick question back to you....

Are you riding on a basically empty stomach or is this after a meal where you have taken in some calories?

  • @Bob-I am guilty of going out on a mostly empty stomach...not smart, I know.
  • On my long rides, I mix 2 bottles, carry powder with me to make another 2-4 bottles, depending on the length of the ride, then just hit gas stations, fountains for water.

  • Random stupid question-how much will you put in one bottle? I tried to put 4 hrs worth in one bottle and it tasted like lemon lime glue

Then a 4 hour bottle will work for you.  The reason I asked was if you had a meal in you then I wouldn't go for a 4 hour bottle but maybe a 3 hour bottle since you have some calories in your belly already.

You need to dial back the flavor slider.  Mine is at maybe 10%.

  • Will do--Thanks everyone image
  • I personally only max out on a 3 hr bottle of Infinit. I think it almost gets too concentrated after that. For your ride in Chicago, since it's 4 hours, I'd maybe go with a 2 hr bottle and like Rich mentioned, mix another one after 2 hrs as you'll need to find water somewhere, so mix another batch....
  • Thanks for your input! So what happens on Ironman race day? How do you break it up into bottles??
  • On IM race day most of us do the following...

56 miles worth of Infinit on your bike to start and the second 56 mile bottle in your bike special needs bag.

My second bottle will be in an insulated bottle which I put in one of those little cooler/lunch bags with an ice pack to keep it cool.
  • x 2 on Riches comments.

You will have a hard time getting 4 hours of Infinit in one bottle and it will be tough to swallow. Recommend making a 2 hour bottle and taking dry Infinit for another two hour bottle in a ziplock. Then at 2 hours stop and buy a 20oz water and make a second 2 hour bottle.

  • new to infinit..so help needed. 2 scoops in a 20 oz bottle, correct? i bought the infint EN mix for IM distance. How long should that 20 oz bottle last on the bike?

    what about the run?

    Thanks!
  •  2 scoops is a serving. If mixed at normal concentration it would be 2 scoops per 20oz. bottle. A lot of folks will mix concentrated bottles with 6 scoops or more. That would need to be chased with water as you sip it or it would get too concentrated in your gut.

My serving size is 250 calories. That's the amount of calories I take in on the bike per hour. The amount of calories you take in per hour on the bike or run is something you will need to determine in training. There's a lot of general info on nutrition in the forums and the WiKi.

I don't use InfiniT on the run.

  • Like Matt said, I use Infinit on the bike - 6 scoops in one bottle for 3 hours. I take a drink of water, then a shot of Infinit, then chase with more water to ensure no stomach issues. Worked great at IMCDA.

For the run, I have a different Infinit run formula. I use a Nathan fuel belt with 10oz bottles. Use 2 scopes in each bottle for one hour of calories. Take a hit of the Infinit as I'm coming into the aid station and then chase it with water. Just make sure you get enough water from the cups on the course. I'd also recommend both of your formulas are dialed down for taste and have a different flavor for the run, so that it's a change after 5-6 hours on the bike....
  • For long rides, I do the 6x scoop in a bottle as well (I use a 28oz super-size bottle, fwiw). I use translucent bottles and mark them into thirds with a sharpie so that I don't over or under-consume. Take water from an aerodrink I refill and use the strategy everyone above describes.

For 1.5/2hr rides, I'll just take one bottle of Infinit at regular strength and just use that.
  • 2x what JT said.  I do the same for the bike and the run.  Only slight difference from my brother's approach on the run is that I'll get a cup of ice at the aid station, pop 1-2 cubes into my mouth, then squirt in the Infinit (which is usually warm and or even hot by this time of day in an IM), swirl it around to cool the Infinit, chew up the ice and make my own Infinit slushie on the go.  i get nutition, hydration and core body cooling in one combo.  Swallow, repeat.  I also carry the ice with me and keep popping in cubes between aid stations for extra hydration and cooling.  Get a fresh cup of ice at each aid staiton.
