what do you see with these numbers

So Coach Rich suggested I extend my rides and runs some what to acclimated to weekly beatings or close to that.

I will drop into an IM program in about a week.

Went out with my Tri friends today who are about a month deep into an IM program and a guy doing IMLP.

So it was about a 70 mile ride with an IF of .92.

Power Agent also showed / s my HR.

I spent 27 % of the time in recovery.

13 % in Endurance

22 % in Threshold

11 % in Race pace

27 % in Max

Something about these numbers doesn't seem right with respect to an IF of .92 .

Any one care to jump in on this.

My best guess is I need a retest or the heat or riding with roadies for a time..

  • I am not sure on this as I am new to power and not super well versed in all of the mombo jumbo...but, all watts aren't created equal, which is why normalized and average watts are often not the same number (at least I think that's true). So, if that is the case, the IF may use normalized watts (which is a better reflection of actual work done) and that 27% of time you spent at your highest zone might have carried enough 'weight' to push that IF up like that.

Now, it is entirely possible that what I said is a load of crap too...but I am taking a stab.
  • David, you numbers ave you At 60% of you ride being above endurance level HR. That does not seam off for a strong .92 ride. What were your expectations? HR is a function of MANY FACTORS, that is why power is the better measure if you have if.
  • Are you mixing up training zones? Is the FT you calculated based upon EN protocols input into your PA software? There are a bunch of methods to calculate the various zones (all of which I ignore). Maybe the zones are based on HR and if you have a max HR that you never came close to, the buckets could be way off.

My thoughts are to confirm that PA has your FT entered correctly and just ignore the rest. Ride hard (at FT) or try really hard to ride a lot at 80%-85% of that number. The rest are just details.

  • 70 mi at 0.92 is ROUGHLY 3.5 hours at 0.92. That seems like a very high IF to me for that length of ride, suggsting maybe a new test is merited. (or at least a new swag of pumping up the FTP a few watts)

I'm not so sure what to say about the HR zones, but it's obvious it was all over the place, rather than steady. If you guys were attacking a lot and using a variable pace/power, that might explain two things - both the high HR time and a high IF (because you would raise the NP with the high power output times). If it was a pretty steady ride, I stand by my original remark.
  • @ Stephen , thanks for the stab.

@ Matt, I do ride with power and was looking to really lay low on the ride since I'm doing Transition Intermediate 2 Weeks but ya ride with hard chargers you well.... ride hard. Since I ride with power I really just glance at my HR doing my down loads. The big red bar on the HR Max section just struck me as odd, I forgot to mention that percentage was 1hr 15min. My expectations are none for the ride really I thought perhaps HR Max was Z5 ,for non-power users which indicate , to me , after an hour at Z5 I would be toast. Albeit we would stop from time to time it wasn't a race.

@ Tom , sure it was a mix just a weekend training ride, yes the input is based on EN protocals entered into my PA, I looked into edit user and all info is correct.

@ William , as the light bulb just went off in my head thats it !!! Attacking the hills with the roadies HR blows up, yes to I was all over the place attacking / pusing on the straights , coasting some on the down hills etc. The IF seemed high to me too with the HR Max so high as well so I posted this for some input. Good job W.. Thx.
  • Ok, I'm calling BS here! Attacking the hills? Where did you ride? There are no hills around Glassboro! There are only little tiny bumps. Hahaha
  • Ha ha, well then attacking the bumps. When you think about it this gang is so large some would picture
hills and others like you, not so much.

  • What the others said... a .92 for 4 hours, in a big group, is hard to do. I think your FTP might need tweaking; but if it feels okay with all your steady/solo rides, then I wouldn't sweat it too much.
  • Well Coach next week I'm jumping in on an IM program that will allow for some retesting somewhere right ?
