Mortons Nueroma

Hello everyone. As some background, I am competeing in IM Lake Placid in a few weeks.  For the last month of so I have been bothered by Morton's Nueroma.  It seems to bother me most when I come off a long bike and run.  Long runs alone are not too bad.  I have seen a podiatrist (who has done Lake Placid himself three times and qualified for Kona), and he modifed the bike shoe of the affected foot.  I think it helped a little, but during last weekends second race rehearsal it was bothering me again on the run.  If it really flares up at Ironman it's going to be a very, very tough run.

So the question is - do I ask the podiatrist for a cortisone shot to get me through the race?  And how far in advance would I do that?

Thanks everyone.

Jim

  • Well I have some experience with this. To keep this short, I was misdiagnosed with sesamoiditis first and I took A LOT of time off. It came back and I got a shot, which worked. I also discovered that I was pinching my toes too hard by wearing bungie laces. I went back to reagular laces except on race day. Later on I ran too far in a minimal shoe and it flared up again. I was bitting at the chomp to get another shot, but at the advice of many on here and my poditrist, I took a little time off instead (2-3 weeks)(still no bungie laces) and I have been fine ever since. Sometimes I when I wake up in the morning I can feel it a little, but never pain. So maybe that wasn't so short, but the point is, too many shots are bad, but I understand the need to want to "fix it" and get on with your race. I believe giving it enough time to ease the flaring while finding the root cause and you should be good in the long run. Hopefully others will giive some better advice. Good Luck.
  • Thanks Jessica. Talked to the podiatrist again, and am going back today. He is going to modify my existing orthotics a little, and give me a cortisone shot. He did not sound thrilled about the shot, but agreed to it since I have the Ironman race in a couple of weeks. Hopefully long-term I can deal with it with some time off, modified orthotics, and stretching/icing. Thanks again.
  • I would do the same thing with a big race coming up. Good luck!
