Michiganers - Need Info Charlevoix/Petoskey Area

Going to be in Charlevoix in a couple of weeks and trying to figure out best places to swim.  I found the pool at the Charlevoix Community Center online, but am also interested in recommendations for good areas to OWS nearby ... will have wetsuit with me.

Thanks in advance.

  • Hey David,

It has been over 40 years, but use to vacation up in the area.  We use to drive up from Detroit suburbs (Warren) to Charlevoix. Charlevoix itself is a small town, but is a summer tourist destination.  They had or have several beaches.  The oldest beach was by a lighthouse.  Not sure if it is still there or not.  It was all made of wood and was pretty cool.  We use to swim out from the beach to the end of the pier where the light house was and swim back.   I do remember the water being cold.  With chattering teeth, we'd warm up on the white sandy beach.  The beach had lifeguards if you're concerned about safety.  Check with them for hazards and let them know what you are up to so they don't freak out!

Lake Charlevoix has a couple of beaches.  There was a beach by the railway depot.  A cousin was up there a couple of years ago and said they had made a lot of improvements.  They call it Depot Beach! (LOL).   FYI, the Lake Charlevoix is calmer and wamer than Lake Michigan.

Worst case scenario, once you get into town, go to the local sporting good shops! Tell them you are training and need suggestions for a open water swim.  Hope this helps!
