Advice needed- Wheels falling of 2 week before HIM

The choice is obvious. But I just want some confirmation so I don't jump off the ledge..   I have Vineman 70.3 in 2 weeks.  Last Thursday during my long run, I hurt my hamstring.  It felt ok on my Saturday ride, but I skipped the run.  I swam on Monday, but didn't run, I did 45 min of the bike on Tuesday and didn't run.  Last night I got food poisoning, so I am not doing anything today. But my hamstring still hurts.  Biking doesn't seem to hurt it too much.

So, my plan is to take the rest of the week off from running, do the bike workouts and the swim workouts and try easy jogging on Monday of next week and see how it goes.  I figure its better to give my hamstring long enough to heal than push it.  It still hurts today (wednesday).  I know at this point, i'm so close to the race that its better to be healty,  I just wanted confirmation.

Thanks,

Peter

  • I would definitely rest and make sure you are doing everything to get that hamstring to heal (rolling, ice, elevation, etc.). From this point on it is basically taper time anyway. Missing some workouts may, at the most, have you feeling a little less sharp on race day but you will still have your fitness. Right now getting to the line healthy is the most important.
  • Rest for sure. And if necessary to completely rest it shouldn't be that big of a deal during your taper. You can always dial down the intensity of the workouts too. Good luck!
  • Peter, You are on the right track, rest the injury while doing active recovery work to get blood flow to the impacted area to help recovery. You have done the work to get the fitness. Use the swim and the bike to keep the cardio edge up. The run fitness will be there on race day. There is no run workout that you can do in the next 2 weeks that will make you faster. Just consider this a customized 2 week taper! Less is more at this point!! Best of luck!!!

  • Peter - you may also want to consider ART on the hammy if still in pain. Another good spot is to check out the mobilization drills that Leigh Boyle has on her web-site Athletes Treating Athletes. Really helped re-hab my hammy this winter/spring so that I could race IMCDA....
  • At this point ART Active Release Therapy is going to be your best bet to make it "better"other than simple rest. You've done the work- so now rest, take Ibuprofen, ice the hammy, if you are going to stretch go VERY easy.  It's better to show up race day 10% under trained then 1% over trained.

  • Thanks everyone! Its starting to feel better, but I'll try ART here in a bit. I don't want to strech it too much too soon. But Biking is feeling better. So another 3 or 4 days and I may try a short slow jog...
