Race Wheels in Lake Placid

I have Sram S80's but I want to have power info on race day.  Race Day wheels does not rent an 808 with a "wired" PT.  All their stuff is wireless.  I am considering running the S80 in the front and using my disc cover on the PT wheel in the back.  I am an experienced rider, finished LP in '06 and am set up (thanks to EN) to have a tremendous day this year.  Just don't want to screw up the wheel selection.  Thought?  Thanks in advance for any input.

  •  Absolutely ride with the wheel cover so that you have Power on race day.  In fact, If someone offered you a Sub 9 Zipp disc for free on race day, you should still ride with the disc cover and Power.

Having power on race day is essential to riding  a smart race and racing to your potential.

Also, if Rich finds out you trained with power and didn't race with it, he will have an unpleasant present for you  !

    Good luck in Lake Placid!

  • x2 for wheelcover....it's what all the cool kids are using! image
  • Not even a question. Go with power.
  • x3 on power but want to clarify a few things.

Do you currently train with power? Or are you going to rent a wheel with power? From my reading it doesn't seem like you do but maybe you just weren't clear.

So if you currently train with power, no big deal. But if you don't train with power but want to race with power you will need to figure out what wattage to race at. My suggestion for this would be what I hear Jordan Rapp say. Warm up well. Then ride for 5' all out. All out. Whatever the average of that number is take 70-75% of that. That's your FTP. Now I would still be conservative and take 68% of that as your target watts for the race.

Of course if you currently train with power ignore the above. My only other suggestion if you are a power user is to have a fallback plan. Make sure you have some HR/PE levels in mind in case something happens to your PM. I speak from experience as my Powertap ran out of batteries at CDA a few weeks ago.

    Best of luck in LP.
  • Thanks guys! Wheel cover it is! Love that I can ask a question and get such quick, quality info. I just wasn't sure whether the general consensus was to avoid a disk due to the high speeds and potential winds on the downhills. Decision made. I'll grip it and rip it. Thanks for clearing it up! @ Tucker, thanks for the info. I do train with power and have a plan I need to follow. FTP 275. I rode my RR at an IF of .703 last Saturday and felt FANTASTIC afterward - best I've ever felt coming of a century plus ride. Ran the six miles at MP plus :30 and felt cued up to go get another twenty. Drinking the EN Kool Aid has been good for this hard driving age grouper. It has reeled me in on the bike so that I can run like I should. Thanks all. BT
