Ideal racing body weight

I have been reading Macca's book and he mentioned being too light at some point in his career to race well and I have read similar comments in the forums here. Is there any way to know what your "ideal" race weight is other than by experience? I haven't been able to find any good resources that calculates this. It would really be nice to know what that number would be.

  • I don't think there's a way to calculate it. It's very personal and is determined through trial and error. That's my understanding anyway.

    Here's a good thread. members.endurancenation.us/Training...aspx#55013

  • Matt Sullivan is right...very personal, although I'm still a few pounds over. Fitzgerald's book on Racing Weight is a good resource for thinking about it. Also, I've read somewhere that:

When your friends start asking if you've been sick cause you looking a little thin, then you are probably 10 pounds over race weight.
When your colleagues start talking about you behind your back...like wondering if you have AIDS or similar, then you are about 5 pounds over race weight.
And when your family stages an intervention to get you to eat, then you ARE AT RACE WEIGHT!
