404/808 Wheels -- what size tube do you carry?

So what size spare tube does everyone carry?  I only want to carry one spare during my race, but if I use a tube with a valve long enough for my 404, the extender for the 808 will be almost to the hub.  Or do most people use a short-valve tube and use extenders for both front and back?

Thanks,

Joe

  • I used to just bring one spare with an extender long enough for the 808 already on it (i.e. about 100-110mm of total valve+extender). This way it will work for either wheel. It would fit the 808 perfectly, and on the 404 there would just be an extra 20 or so mm of valve. In other words, get a standard 36 or 48 mm tube and put an zipp 808 extender on it and you will be good to go.
  • @Matt - Thanks for the quick reply (and sorry it has taken so long to acknowledge....). When you say "I used to....", does that mean you aren't riding a 404/808 combo anymore? Second question: do you use the standard ZIPP extender where you have to 'lock' the valve open?
  • @Joe - yes, I'm racing on a set of 808s this year instead. I run challenge latex tubes with removable valve cores and extenders that move the valve core to outside the rim. For spares, I use the zipp style extenders as they are easier to move from one tube to another if needed. Yes, I lock the valve open on those and then put the extender on over some white plumbers tape.
  • anyone know if there are valve extenders that don't require the plumbers tape? I have a 404 on the front and always find the tape issue really annoying.
  • I have valve extenders with the plumbers tape-b4 the race I put an extender on 2 tubes in my saddle bag. Like Matt said, works for the 404 and 808.
  • @tom - I you use tubes with removable valve cores and standard tubular type extenders you don't need tape as the extender and valve both have rubber o-rings. One of many advantages to removable valve cores.

Like Matt mentioned, get some valve extensions that work for removable core tubes (and use removable core tubes).  The extender screws into the open valve after you remove the stem.  The stem then screws into the extender.  No tape, no nothing.

I use the Vittoria extenders.  Look under "Valve Extension" halfway down the page: http://www.vittoria.com/product/accessories/

  • topeak and tufo.

one has the valve care you insert as with the vittoria.

the other you just screw on.   seals great with no tape (has oring like seal).    has a valve closer built in.     This is the way to go for the spare.

  • @Matt, do you need a tool to remove the cores? Saw one on a website and wasn't sure it that removes valves from all tubes or just ones with removable cores. Also, do you have a recommendation for an extender? I've seen a couple, but they seem to recommend tape even with the removable core.

If I buy a tube with a removable core, can I still use it as a regular tube? Thinking that I want to keep a couple in my saddle bag. If I flat out on my rear standard tire, I just use the tube, if I flat on my front 404, I remove the core, add the extender and inflate. Is this the right process or should I set up a couple of tubes with the extenders first, and if the non deep tire flats, just use the longer stem and let it stick out.

    thx!

@Tom - the make a tool but hunestly needle nose piliers work just as well.  Some extenders include the tool, which is just a small plastic piece with a slot the right size to unscrew the core.  Yes, removable core tubes work just like anyother tube and you can use them with no extender.  I personally just install the extender first so I don't have to mess with it on the side of the road, however you could easily do it at the time of the flat if you really wanted too.  I see no harm in running the longer stem on a 404 if I get a flat, sure it wont look pro, but it is only to get me through the rest of the race.
