Race or No Race in IM Wk 10 of 12
I have IMRG on 7 Aug and am considering a race during week 10 of the 12 wk advanced plan...basically to add some intensity...and find my race legs. The options are:
1) Siesta Key Olympic Triathlon (Sat, 23 July, 7am). This would probably toast me for the day. Race in lieu of hard 3 hr bike ride...no other adjustment to the schedule...or maybe shift hard bike to Sunday.
2) Trwilight Sprint Triathlon (Sat, 23 July, 7pm). This is only 1/4 mile swim, 10mi bike and 3 mi run. I could still do a hard 2 hour bike earlier in the day and then treat the evening triathlon as a C race.
Would I get any benefit from this or is it just a stupid idea?

In a different post today, I called the 3-4 weeks leading up to an IM race "the Hall of Mirrors."
You are in that Hall of Mirrors.
No race.
(fwiw, I did a HIM 3 weeks out from Regenesburg last year (I needed it for a IMCAN Qualifying spot) and I can't think of any benefit I gained towards Reg).
Paul - Prior to this year, I usually did a Sprint tri a week or two before IM CDA, and had no problems with generating a good performance on the big day. An evening "triathlon" of those distance (which will feel laughable) sounds like a fun idea to get some of the jitters out. Just remember not to overdo the high effort stuff that week. Me, I'd replace that week's bike intervals with the "long" ride you have planed on the day of the race. And not overload yourself on the day of that race. And not sprint for the finish line.
This year I had a chance to do a small sprint before IMCDA. I decided agaisnt it, but in retrospect, I think it would have been a good idea to get rid of the jitters like Al said. That being said, Im just a 13hr finisher type and not trying to get to Kona. If you do go for it, just treat it as training, have fun, and don't kill yourself. Definitely dont take risks and end up crashing your bike or something.
An evening triathlon? Is it OWS? Sounds cool.
@ Greg - yes, it is an OWS in the Gulf of Mexico. Most folks will be off the bike before dark, but you have to have a headlight mounted to your bike to be able to race.
@ Al - don't have time during the week to pop a 3 hr ride...and thus my fear about doing the race.
For sure the need for a longish bike ride 2 weeks out trumps the little race. Don't try to fudge the ride just to do the race.
