ENAIA - Endurance Nation Acronyms, Initialisms and Abbreviations
So, I was reading an article about problems over a Microsoft. No one outside of the company understands the internal lingo and their job postings are indecipherable. Some in the company don't now all of the lingo either.
Triathlon is not un-similar and here in EN we've got a log of new people on team (myself included) that may not know every term we use here in posts. EN also has a lot of internal terms and such.
I thought it might be helpful to compile a list of Endurance Nation Acronyms, Initialisms and Abbreviations or ENAIA
Below are 50+ such items (not categorized or sorted so far) that I think might be a good starting point. Some are more obvious than others, but I tried to put myself in the shoes of a completely new EN member with just a bit of tri experience. And read through a few forum posts and some of the guides. This is what I came up with - I'm sure I missed a lot.
If RnP think it's a good idea, we can wiki-ize it and point EN members there. Feel free to add and we'll get them all together in an order that seems appropriate.
2 x 20 - An interval set of 20 minutes done twice. Often shown with a rest interval in parenthesis afterwards as in 2 x 20 (2'). This particular interval is significant in that it is the one EN recommends using to perform an FTP test "in Haus".

Comments
OK- there was an Acronym thread on EN 3.0 that I wanted to include here. But I can't seem to open it up- (I get a "you don't have a Pro membership" error). Bummer, cause I recall there being good stuff over there. Anyway- here are a few other ENisms that come to my mind and I hope others will add.
FYI- for the Jan OS group- we've agreed to try to remember to spell out the acronym when we first use it so the newbies can come up to speed. Newbies- your job is to call us out if we forget!
OG: Original Gangsta (Member of EN from it's birth)
L'il Peep: Smaller folks with smaller FTPs
FTP: Functional Threshold Power (a power metric- see the power seminar)
Koolaid: EN Philosophy
Pain Cave: The place where indoor folks do their trainer workouts
Drainer: derogative term for a trainer
Dreadmill: derogative term for a treadmill
Coach Dick: Coach Rich when he's in bad cop mode
Patty: Coach Patrick when Coach Rich is teasing him
The Halligan: He who shall not be named! The Chuck Norris of EN
HTFU: Harden the F* Up
Boob to Tube: Balls to Wall for Chickas
Chickas: EN Woman
Cowgirl: Chicka going to IMoo
Sherpa: Friend or Family member who comes to races to provide support
DH: Dear Husband
DW: Dear Wife
SAU: Spousal Approval Unit (or Significant other Approval Unit)
I know there are lots more! But hopefully that gets folks started!
IOW = In Other Words
SWAG = Scientific Wild Ass Guess
Great post from the FNG! (all in good fun when you figure it out )
:-) That's a new one!
Thanks for clarification on SWAG (that one really got me as i was listening to the Power Webinar about a month ago).
And I know exatcly what FNG means
me too, thanks for clarifying,
When the thread is complete it should be copied to the Wiki area.
Here are a few that got me for a long time. Finally had to ask-
IIRC: If I Recall Correctly
YMMV: Your Mileage May Vary
I'll start a wiki page tomorrow.
Should they be strict alphabetical or grouped by category (power, pace, forums, etc.)? While i like the idea of categories I think alphabetical will work best.
I vote for alphabetical. Folks may not know if something is a power or pace or whatever acronym.
I have also seen:
IMC- Ironman Canada
RS = Race Simulation
RR = Race Report
w/kg = Watts per Kilogram
PMC = Peformance Management Chart (in WKO+ and uses the three terms below)
ATL = Accute Training Load
CTL = Chronic Training Load
TSB = Training Stress Balances
WSM = Wicked Smart Member
WFM - Wicked Fast Member (not official, but I think it should be and nominate Al for having an AG record)
LSS = Life Stress Score, Example: "My LSS is too high to warrant an accurate VDOT"
LOL = Laugh out Loud
slog jog: this is slower than Easy Pace! normally coming back from recovery, an Ironman or other. the miles count but you don't actually advertise the pace!!
Runabout: sort of like a walkabout, you just run with no particular route or pacing in your mind just thinking... and you come back when you have your problem solved! or feel better about it.
Bonk: you run out of calories and your pace slows down and your legs feel like concrete, can't think or do simple math. Might be irritable or depressed about pace or race.
Coke: the answer to the Bonk! not diet, not generic and definitely not PEPSI!
Outchicked: this is when a dude gets passed by a chick either on the run or the bike.
Flip it: normally a term related to an out and back bike course
Out and Back> the same route forwards and then backwards
Point to Point: a linear route, requiring transportation back to the start
Admin: time wasted on bike or run even due to traffic lights, equipment setback or other annoying details.
TT: Talk Time, this is time allotted pre ride or pre workout to talk to your friends. The more the people, the more TT.
Game Face: TT is over and time to work.
The zone: that place in a workout where time stands still but effort is high or moderate but the pain dissipates and the joy goes up.

B race: important but not the end all.
C race: training races with no taper or recovery hardly.
PR: Personal Record or PB: Personal Best
Taper: a period of time allowed for resting and recovering for a race. The longer the event, the longer the taper.
Rest Day: a day of no training or very light activity
Hard Rest day: no training
stand down: forced rest days! even though athlete is itching to do something.
“BOP, MOP, FOP” – Back of the Pack, Middle of the Pack, Front of the Pack, respectively
WU = Warm Up. Easy swimming, biking or running to warm up the muscles and prepare you for…
MS = the Main Set. This is the meat of the session. Within Endurance Nation you will often see an MS described with no total volume assigned to the workout. This is not a mistake. In general, the only workouts we have volume goals for are the long bike and long runs. Everything else is what it is according to what life gives you. Just do the Main Set with life dictating how much additional warm up or cool down (below) you do. That said, if you have more time available than the MS describes, Zone 3 on the bike and Zone 2/3 on the run are great places to just punch the clock and accumulate lots of “work.”
CD = Cool Down, easy walking, jogging, or spinning at the end of training session. Bonus if you can follow up with some stretching as well.
‘ = Minutes
” = Seconds
(x’) = anything in parentheses is the rest interval. Just ride/run easy for x minutes or seconds.
3 x 5’ (1-2’) = Three (3) repetitions (repeats) of 5 minutes each. After each repeat rest for 1-2 minutes before starting the next. In general, you should continue to exercise very lightly (Z1) during this rest interval.
Strides = A drill of sorts used to improve running form. Simply run quickly, with good form, for about 30 seconds. Count your left foot strikes during the Stride. Your goal is 45+, yielding a cadence of 90+ rpm. Walk or jog lightly for 45” between each Stride. Strides are about form, not fitness, so don’t worry about pace or heart rate. Take as much rest as you need between each Stride to continue to run with good form.
Negative Split = The second half of the interval is faster than the first half. For example, for a 300yd swim, negative split, you try to swim the second half of the 300 faster than the first half.
Descend: Perform each interval faster than the one before it. For example, for 4 x 200 Descending, #2 is faster than #1, #3 is faster than #2, etc.
Build: you get faster within the interval itself. Example: 3 x 300, Build by 100’s. Within each 300, you make each 100 progressively faster: 1st 100 is easy, 2nd is Steady, 3rd is Mod-Hard, for example.
Power Stuff: Refer to Training with Power for more information
* FTP (or FT): Functional Threshold Power
* IF: Intensity Factor
* TSS: Training Stress Score
Pace Stuff: Refer to Training with Pace for more information.
A few more ENisms
Fook or Fookin: Exactly what you think it means
Double Top Squirrel Secret: Supposed to be a secret- but probably really isn't since this is almost always followed by the secret itself!
Nice: In a podcast between R&P, usually means R has asked P to cover a topic that P isn't prepared to cover. His first response at the hand-off is "Nice".
EN Gang sign - cute hand signal used by middle aged white folks dressed in spandex to indicate being part of the club which is often done poorly and/or in an unrecognizable manner by those who do not think clearly at the end of races longer than 4 hours or in general.
WSM - wicked smart member or wicked smartass member depending on who you are talking about
One we missed:
Dillio - EN talk for thing, widget, gadget. Spelling correct?
Dealio
did we mention "The Code" = a roadie code of cycling that is not be confused with the triathlon way of cycling.
Feed Bottle: the water bottle filled with your calories normally in a powdered form mixed with water.
Body composition: work on your "body comp" : referencing your weight
Booger: as in "don't booger it up" (don't mess it up) or as in "boogers coming out of my nose" I was riding so hard
bunny hop: as in a bike trick that if you know The code!! you can do, as to avoid potholes, roadkill and the like on a road.
Too bad there isn't a "Big Peep" for those of us big guys with small FTP's (insert Viagra joke here). Or maybe I should just HTFU
Marianne - thanks for defining Coke! I've never known why someone would want some on their run. Should we wiki all the wacky (that's fun to say) nutrition, i.e. Coke, chicken broth - bleh!, etc.
Also getting passed by a woman is simply "chicked", isn't it?
Pee-Wee Herman-ed or PW'ed: a tri-geek decked out in their aero-everything getting passed by someone on a hybrid bike.
Never heard that one- but it reminds me of two more:
"That Guy": Someone doing it wrong or looking foolish. As in, "you don't want to be That Guy".
Fred: That Guy who shows up for a roadie ride with several cycling code violations.
Oh, and I guess we should define "roadie"- a cyclists (non triathlete)
Quick question...I am a noob, and I am going to have some 30/30s coming up in a couple weeks in my OS plan. I can't seem to find anything in the Forums that actually explains to me what these are...can someone help?
I guess I will get VERY used to these?
Stephen I actually did include this one in my list - it'l be easier to find one we go wiki:
30/30s - VO2 Max intervals on the bike - 30 seconds at 120% FTP / 30 seconds at 50-60% FTP as per: http://www.endurancenation.us/en_fo...stcount=18
Also - this was just mentioned here as well: http://endurancenation.us.dnnmax.co...fault.aspx
Enjoy - I've got a few weeks before my first 30/30
IOW= in other words
