IMLV RR#1 In need of some help

 HI!

Had my RR#1 today. I am in need of some advice/help. Today was not humid but probably around 90. This was the hottest weather I have had the fortune of training in this year.

Bike:

112 Miles- 6:12

TSS: 305.1

IF: .69

VI: 1.07

Trying to hit 250-270 calories per hour using INFINIT with emergency gels in the pocket.

First 3 hours-great, felt super strong but the IF was up at around .72. Decided to take a break from INFINIT for about 30 minutes and popped a gel. Instant nausea, never went away. Went back to the INFINIT but the stomach was really protesting stuff. I did force it down every 15 minutes with water.

At around 4.5 hours, the wheels started coming off. The nausea was pretty bad, right foot fell asleep and started to become very painful, headache settled in and had trouble holding watts. IF dropped to .63 for the last 1.5 hours. Noticed that I had not urinated in several hours and my sweat rate really dropped even though it was hot out.

Going out for the run I was unsure how I was ever going to make it. Strapped on the fuel belt that had bottles of IRONMAN PERFORM. My first few sips were great and started to feel a bit better. At mile 4 the nausea came back, kind of dizzy, weak, quads were thick and sore. Finally, at mile 5 I would try to run and my heart rate would jump up too fast, had to walk. Try to run, heart rate jumps up. At mile 5.75 worried girlfriend came out to see if I was ok and I jumped in the car feeling very defeated.

I am concerned about the heart rate thing, the "no urinating" thing, headache etc.  Does it sound like electrolyte stuff?

Does INFINT have enough electrolytes to cover us?

Hope you can help...feel a bit defeated and bummed BUT, rested, went out for pizza and beer and am feeling back to normal! Just a little worried.

Thanks!!

JC

  • I love Infinit - but I learned the hard way at Eagleman that the answer to your last question is a resounding "No". Are you a big guy like me (205#)? I tried relying solely on my Infinit during the bike, and I backcalculated later on that I was negative about 400 mg sodium -each hour-. Definitely explains why I felt like such shit on the run. So, for my RR I started with the Succeed S-caps - pop one every half hour on the bike. 12 caps over 6 hours. Problem absolutely solved. Brings me up to about 1000mg per hour, the recommended level for my size. Hope this helps. The fact that you felt better after a nice salty pizza may confirm my suspicion image
  • How much did you drink in total? It could be a salt story too, but the headache and nausea sound like dehydration. Given the heat, you probably should have been doing a bottle an hour of fluid - or maybe more.

I might also have started out even more conservatively on the bike - .72 feels easy to start, but after 4+ hours, not so much. Try taking it back on the next rehearsal to .7 or even less to start - even just for the first 90-120 minutes.

Still several more weeks to get this figured out. You will - don't worry!

  • MUST nail down your hydration needs in the HEAT.

    What I do:

Weigh myself just before the ride and run.

Weigh myself just after the run(before drinking)

IF you have lost any weight you are not drinking enough.

i.e. 1 lb of weight loss=16oz of fluid.

Keep track of all fluid drank during the workout. Therefore fluid drank + weight loss/ hr of workout = .....oz/hr needed.

For me. I weigh 174 lbs and in the HEAT I need 48oz/hr to keep weight stable.

Keep in mind if that's your first real workout in the HEAT you body has more fluid requirements.

MUST nail this....IM LOU could be hotter than 90F in 2nd half of ride.

  • I think your symptoms sound like dehydration too. Check out the hydration stuff in the wiki. For a hot IM it is critical that you understand the difference between nutrition and hydration. Definitely do the sweat test as suggested by Michael. Also, when you are planning for your next RR (or even long ride) make sure you take into account that you got tired of Infinit and wanted something different. Whether you decide to indulge that or not, make sure you stay consistent with what works on race day (i.e. don't pop a gel on race day if you haven't done it successfully in training). I always find it a good idea on long rides and runs to test out some alternate nutrition in case something happens and I need something different from the course. Will help you OODA on race day in case things don't go as planned (which, of course, they never do image).
  • Can' t thank you enough for your input. Really. One of the reasons I love EN.
@Jonathan. I weigh around 185. Not a light dude but I eat like a horse and always need to eat. Blood sugar can drop during any day and I am toast. Going to try the salt tablets next go around.

@Ann. Well, I am ashamed to say that I went out for 6+ hour ride and did not finish 6 water bottles. Maybe I came close with some extra gulps at "special needs". Planned ridiculously poor. Next time I am going to shorten the loop so I can refill more often than every 56. Can't believe I didn't plan that and that I don't HAVE exact amounts on how much I drank.

@Michael. Sweat test is the emphasis this week. Have to learn about my body''s needs big time. THANK YOU!

@Jennifer. "tired" of the INFINIT is an understatement. image I agree, I need to have an alternate go to. I might try perpetuem again. It has been years but perhaps it will be better. Any suggestions?

@EN FRIENDS! THANK YOU so much for your time and caring responses.
